Gerald , this would be a job for Revo Studio or Handy Studio , Handy Studio is great with merging objects by the features and Revo Studio better with manual placement of marker point .I recommend to watch Jon Himself video on youtube starting at 5min , he explains in a great way how to merge objects together , no matter mechanical or organic Merging multiple Objects after Scanning
It may works or not , all depends of the scanned data , there is no one workflow for everything . I found that scanned orgarning forms like human head-body are much more difficult to fuse than mechanical parts .That why I prefer the market points in Revo Studio for organic scans .
I do specialize in organic scans mostly ( humans soft organic forms) , less for hard edge scans ( mechanical type )
I give myself today another challenge , just to testing the depth and it worked
I used my new turntable , Body scan mode ( no markers since lots of features ) hand held , scanned each one in 40 sec per rotation around 400 frames per object in less than 1 min and 20 sec both parts
object size L22x W15x H5 inches
Hmmh, I think a main problem is that the algorithm still is buggy. It shouldn´t overlay itself with mutiple objects hitting each other in weird directions when just turning on the turntable.
I also encountered that the software switches itself some of the settings and I had to change again a few times till they remained…
I tried a bright variety of tests. I used chalk spray, painted some dots on the object, used marker mode, used feature mode, different light situations, angles, followed your and other instructions, tried different settings for everything but till now I only get one scan which I would say this was good, it was a hand size shell. The objects I bought it for is jewelry (rings). Before I bought it I saw some of jumbonots small scans of strawberrys etc and thought it should work. In the mean time I thought it can´t handle small stuff like rings but then I saw some of your scans with 1mm size structures.
So, I spend quit a few days on it and be disappointed…;-( ( I know they bring out now the mini which would be better suited for jewelry but that doesn´t help me with teh pop2)
@Skyrider There are known bugs that will be addressed soon , why you not try Handy Studio 4 for now until the bugs are fixed in Revo Studio. I prefer using Handy Studio 4 for smaller things . Less noises, faster fusing , less of the new bugs .
I am opening my new YT channel and will cover lots of stuff .
Until then if you scan a very small objects like rings I recommend to scan them together with a dummy prop that has minimum 30x30x30 mm volume and some features ( no cubes) it can be a simple plastic fork, anything that is not a cube or sphere or cylinder It will helps you keep the tracking and picking up small details from your small object. you can later remove the dummy prop in Revo Studio.
MINI will be great for jewelry and very small objects as with 0.02mm accuracy you can’t get wrong but we see what 3D resolution it offers . Most laser scanners with 0.01mm accuracy offer at least 0.029mm 3D resolution . But remember one thing , how higher the accuracy and resolution how more difficult it is to scan objects .
And here is the real reproduction 3D render of the actual object scanned with POP2 LOL Surprise ! Yes it was a cardboard packing from my roomba vacuum cleaner lol sorry guys in my workshop you will not find engines or this type of objects to scan .
Hey man, I am so happy to see the capabilities of this scanner through the success of your scans! I just got my scanner today so I am still waiting on the CD key for Revo Studio.
Following your steps of fusing the point clouds every 300 frames, and finally meshing at 6 value and 3 smoothness, this is the results I got, compared to the headsculpt I scanned.
I am quite shocked by how much details were missing in the scanned model. From your experience, would you say that this is the best that the scanner can achieve for a sculpture that is about half the size of the statue that came with the scanner? I am hoping that meshing with Revo Studio will bring out more details like your Angelina Jolie’s portrait, but I am also wondering if I am not scanning it properly… Appreciate any insight you might have, thank you for your time!
Hi @zedabyu thanks for sharing. I think you got a great result considering how small the head statue is. I would expect less details with this volume, but you did a great job ! You may have better results when meshing it in Revo Studio but you will have to be very careful with denoiser and get slow on that step by step until you like the results , Mesh it at the higher setting 7 it will make the mesh 75% bigger in resolution but also much more finer noises , make sure before meshing you clean all overlapped points until you get message saying no overlapped points detected ( hopefully you did not got any holes while scanning as it sometimes blow off the fine details when closing holes . My scan of AJ was at human scale of course so more data was collected. Once you zoom it out on the screen it looks much sharper , I did not yet have the time to retopologize the mesh and generate micro displacement and normal maps to improve the finest details on top of the scan to complete it . But I will not be able to post it here anyway since it is part of our new project.
Anyway great work , I hope you get your CDKey soon and try to to improve your scan result , and please don’t discourage yourself , to have exactly copy of your head sculpture at that size you would need a scan with at least of 0.02mm accuracy , and because it is so small the micro noises are not in your favor. There can be also issue with blurring of the pattern because of the material that the sculpture is made off ( if it is plastic or any other material based on oil it tend to blur the pattern slightly by diffusing its sharpness), and also check your scan Calibration values to make sure it is not too much off , my last calibration results was 0.05200 but I see with the time it changing back to 0.0900 again .
Thanks for your tipps! I tried out today including a dummy object and that helped a lot.
I have the idea to construct a kind of three-dimensional stand with an irregular shape on which the rings are positioned and can be seen well from all sides when they move on the turntable. I will try this out in the next few days.
I´m looking forward to your YT-Channel
Another attempt of full body scan , ended up with 46 millions points , I should do that using Handy Scan , Revo Scan add too many overlapped points, after removing the wasted overlapped point data in Revo Studio I ended up with 3.5 millions poly mesh .
Body Mode : High Accuracy
Turntable speed : 20 sec per rotation ( 10 sec faster than original turntable )
Stopped each full rotation around 225 frames , fused and next section etc…
Lots of Dry shampoo , next time going for white hair spray
Hi guys , I need to highly recommend for you to try free software called CloudCompare , it is free , amazing results from POP2 fused point cloud , clean noises , SOR Filter , meshing etc… super results
Sometimes POP1 or Low Accuracy is enough to scan some objects , You don’t always need High Accuracy unless you create textures from color vertex data then it matters , but if you create texture mapping inside Revo Scan you don’t need HA
This is low accuracy at 0.3mm same as POP1
And here is high accuracy at 0.1mm ( 0.05mm) like POP2
as you see not much difference at all beside a lot more data and wasting time processing , choice wisely your settings , less sometimes is more .
An offtopic question: I’d like to print all of this topic into a PDF for reference, but the problem is that the webpage is dynamic: when I scroll down, new posts and pictures are loaded (which is ok), but when scrolling down, earlier posts and pictures vanish. So there is never the entire topic available to be printed, earlier “pages” are empty.
Is there a way to do this?
I’m using Firefox on Windiows.
No problem Fred , I can do it , I assume full body scan ? since you mentioned dry shampoo haha , I really need to find something better than powder or dry shampoo , I was thinking about white hair spray , it would cover better and without the overpowering smell . Funny fact is that eyebrows scanning fine without anything but not all black hair want to be scanned . I will let you know how it works so you don’t have to try .
I will prepare now quick for you the scanning progress for the full body . to be continued …
Same here and I use Chrome , I think it would be better to print it by smaller section like 10 pages , I was able to get 11 pages full , starting from top , then see how many you got and scroll down to the missed page and print again , and scroll down and print again … it seems like it generates only 4 days worth of pages per print/view
