Is the POP 4 better than MetroX?

Hi,

I have a MetroX that I have barely even used. I’m toying with the idea of trading it in on the POP 4, mostly because it is wireless. I do realise the MetroX has slightly better accuracy than the POP 4 but other than that, isn’t the POP 4 better in every other feature? Or am I missing something?

Regards
Mark

Hi @tHeSmUrF

POP 4 is not more wireless than MetroX , laser mode still require Revo Mirror

MetroX have still better accuracy in general
POP 4 is great for scanning other stuff or as companion to MetroX but not replacement .

It all depends on what you want to scan with .

Hi PUTV,

I thought the POP 4 was wireless, is it not? Whereas my MetroX needs to be tethered by the USB cable.

I don’t have specific things I need to scan - it is a real mixed bag. It could be everything from steel shed framing for creating CNC routing paths for flush wood trim pieces through to scanning small machines or broken plastic parts that I can reproduce on my 3D printers. The difference in accuracy between the POP 4 and MetroX doesn’t really concern me too much.

I’m not that keen on buying yet another additional scanner as I have already done that - I have a Mini and a Range that I also never use. I was interested in replacing the MetroX if the POP 4 could do everything it could, while Revopoint are offering the attractive trade-in for POP 4 backers.

It is starting to sound like I maybe shouldn’t bother and instead keep the MetroX and cancel my POP 4 order.

Mark

Hi Mark ,

If you are already baker keep it , I thought you planning something for the future .

The KS price is very attractive and worth it !
There will be functions with the mobile app that allows you using it outdoors as well regardless of the weather ( sunny or not ), only the laser mode requires Revo Mirror as with MetroX. Since it need slightly more power to run. MetroX can be used wireless as well but not outdoors.

For me personally the new VCSEL mode and the Hybrid mode is something MetroX can’t do outdoor on a sunny day . The laser mode can be used also outdoors just via Revo Mirror.

The laser mode accuracy match the accuracy of MetroX , only the MetroX Auto mode is better of course for knowing reasons .

But for around the house scanning , it would be better to trade in MetroX and keep Pop 4 as it give you something extra .
Or if budged allow keep both and then you don’t need anything else as everything will be already covered.

You can check out my POP 4 everyday objects showcase , still working on new scans to see how good you can go , the laser mode is solid …

You always welcome Mark , anytime !

Hi Mark - I, too, had 3 RevoPoint scanners at one time, having fallen for the KS hype. I found out that the market for used units is almost non-existent, so even though I got a price break via the KS campaigns, I wound up loosing money. So I am sitting tight with my MetroX unit (having finally unloaded the other two models, one of which was never even taken out of the box!). From where I sit, RevoPoint is putting most of its resources on new products with much less effort on the software. Makes sense since they make their money on the hardware, not the software. Still, disappointing to say the least. Upgrading for relatively minor hardware improvements is an expensive proposition so I would recommend sitting tight with the MetroX, get rid of the dust collectors, and work with the unit you have. As you spend more time with the MetroX, you will develop your own list of specs & features you need &/or desire, which will help you decide in the future when and what to replace the MetroX with.

One other thought: Just because something is “better” doesn’t mean it is significantly better (in terms of your personal use) and is therefore financially justified. For example, if your current automobile gets 23 mpg, is it worth spending $45K to replace it with a vehicle that gets 24 mpg? No, but it may be worth spending that $45K to get a vehicle that gets 50 mpg.

Hi @drkenb

I am writing to address your comments regarding our latest release of POP 4. While I respect your right to an opinion, I would like to clarify several factual points regarding the POP 4 to ensure a more accurate comparison with the MetroX.

The POP 4 is not intended as a direct replacement for the MetroX, but rather as a companion designed to handle specific tasks that the MetroX cannot. It introduces several hardware and software innovations that set it apart in the market:

  • Versatile Environmental Performance: The POP 4 can scan outdoors in full sunlight across all modes, including laser mode, 4 modes without requiring a Revo Mirror.

  • Advanced Tracking and Modeling: It utilizes color and texture patterns for tracking, allowing for the scanning of completely flat objects. Additionally, it supports the creation of 3D Gaussian Splatting models.

  • Innovative Hardware: The device features Hybrid 2 infrared projectors that utilize both structured and fits patterns for superior tracking accuracy.

  • High-Speed Scanning: The inclusion of VCSEL scanning mode allows for rapid capture at 103 fps, which is ideal for scanning large objects quickly.

  • Intelligent Software Features: The software automatically segregates the background from the object in real-time. This includes the ability to remove the floor or even the user’s hand from the scan while the object is being held. Or the object selection only or just part of it

These features, which are fully functional on our mobile app under any lighting conditions, represent significant technical advancements rather than minor hardware updates.

I hope this provides a clearer understanding of the unique capabilities the POP 4 brings to Revopoint product lineup.

Hi! Is there any info about POP4 depth camera resolution?

You say POP 4 doesn’t replace MetroX. How can it not if one of its features directly overlaps and surpasses it? I’d say POP4 both replaces and surpasses Metro X PRO. Show me someone who seriously uses the Metro series’ Fullfield mode and would refuse to replace POP4 with IR?

Hi @Yan

I already explained in my last post .

If you think that infrared can replace Blue light Full Field or Auto mode you have zero understanding about scanning and techniques used for scanning .

Not everyone owns Metro series scanners , there are Artist that need to capture color objects for other purposes than auto reverse engineering, they want to scan people , organic objects and real life objects , that is where Metro series is not for .. so give other group of people have the chance to buy a scanner for their needs .

Auto mode and Blue light Full Field is still the most accurate scanning technology that infrared structured light can’t replace it and never will .

If you scan people or art object for games or VR , you don’t need Metro series scanners as they are not usable for this kind of work .

For that reason POP 4 is a great companion that allows you to scan things that Metro series can’t .

But definitely it is not a replacement , and if you think so , be my guest but don’t complain later.

Automatic mode is out of the question. If you don’t have a more powerful SLS scanner and need one, it’s a really useful feature. I can’t think of any use for full-field scanning other than organics, especially very limited ones like busts. IR scanning is perfect for that. I tried scanning spray-coated technical parts with full-field scanning, and the results were always worse than laser scanning. Could you share where you actually use this mode?

Full Field scanning is for objects that have lots of unique features or need to be used with markers .

You can check my Mini 2 showcase and Blue Light Full Field scans , you going to be surprised , Laser mode do not reach that details and smoothness of the surface.

Thank you for all the replies. I had decided to trade the MetroX in and get the POP 4 but I’m now back on the fence after reading the discussion.

While my use for the scanner is for various purposes, I don’t have a real need for colour, nor do I have any use for scanning outside. The improved tracking in the POP 4 and the background segregation etc. is of interest, I don’t know if that justifies the cost to upgrade.

Hi Mark

You will need to make decision by yourself on this one as nobody else can do that for you .

Best regards

I noticed in this chat earlier the phrase “I might trade it in …”. Does RevoPoint offer trade-ins?

They do. With the POP 4 there was an offer of $400 USD for the MetroX which I believe is a bit higher than the normal trade-in amount.

Excellent, I have an older scanner that didn’t produce the results I wanted. I purchased a Mini and it is perfect. I want to by a second Mini and I hope to trade in the older scanner. Thanks

I should have added the original scanner was a RANGE2 device.

I have an essentially brand new mini I don’t use that I might sell but it is a mini not mini 2.
