I have three dozen scans since getting the MetroX and not one is worth a darn.
Here’s another crappy scan
Is it user error or is this thing just that bad?

Looks much better than my scan with Miraco Pro. I can’t do whole object scan without losing tracking or it just goes off and adds more points to the scan like upside down points that I have to undo. You should be very proud of your scan. Just needs fine tuning.
I reverse engineer most of what I scan and my RE software has an absolute fit over all the noise.
This part is Red Carbon Fiber, it’s a little shiny on the faces, but if I still had the Einscan HX it would have scanned this no problem.
So I sprayed it, which is a pita, but is about the only way I can get a half decent scan from the MetroX. Red, Blue, Black, Matte, Silver, shiny. Whatever. ALL need spray to get even close to a decent scan. $40/can. Unless something is a neutral grey, it just won’t scan for diddly. Even this with spray is very noisy on the edges.
What am I doing wrong? I see others scanning black parts w/ no spray and they come out nicely, I can’t scan something black to save my life. Have to spray it.
All this part is. Took about an hour to scan it and get the above.
IDK. Frustrated. This should be like a 5min job.
Sorry you are having trouble. The MetroX is capable of producing quality scans.
First off, it is a blue laser, so it will struggle with anything that is colored red. That’s just physics, nothing you can do about that other than spray it.
What are your settings for your scan. Walk us through your workflow. What mode are you scanning in? Thats a nice small part, it would go well on the turn table with auto mode. Lets start there. Post up your raw scan and then your settings for fusing and meshing and a picture of each step.
Unless you just came to complain, which then, carry on
I went back and looked at your showcase. You’ve done good scans before. You may just be struggling because if the red color
Hi.
When the color or surface property is an issue and you need some scanning spray, but you can brush or wash it off the object, there are must cheaper DIY alternatives to prof.sprays
I don’t scan a lot of shiny metallic things, but when I try it seems I can only get the scanner to pick up anything when the scanner is parallel with the surface. I assume off angle just reflects the pattern off into Neverland.
Your sample doesn’t look super reflective, but the red is probably the other constraint here.
I was doing this little drone last night and really struggling with it. Black worked best, but it was still missing a lot.
So out of frustration I sprayed it and then got a half decent scan. Still noisy around the edges, but I can probably work with this.
Another problem I’m having is that if part of a connecting piece doesn’t scan then fusion deletes the whole body. For example the camera mount has the little rubber balls connecting it and they wouldn’t scan so when I ran fusion it was deleting the whole camera. Same with motors. Really frustrating that fusion is doing this, I wish there was some sort of setting or option for NOT deleting large chunks of the scan when fusing.
Another problem is that the scanner needs to allow me to change from normal to black to shiny during a scan. I think this would help a lot to get those details on a mixed body like this.
anyway, wish in one hand…
Hi Robin, I don’t find your scans crappy at all , you improved so much since the begining and your results are very good to begin with.
Practice makes it perfect !
The upcoming software version will handle better red color surfaces , red surfaces absorb every light but red , that why are hard to scan using blue light , products here .. but the Dev.team is working in solution improving it .
Keep up the good work , don’t get so hard on yourself. Scans don’t means to looks like CAD models , but as references to build one upon it, and your results are great considering you dealing with difficult to scan objects that needs extra attention a more practice to archive the goal.
