I am a fan of these 3d printed scanning towers.I put miraco scanning markers and use them upright or lying down depending on shape and size of the object for great tracking in marker mode (and even feature mode).

What kind of editing do you want to do with stl or obj? Depending on editing needs there are different (free) softwares available.
