I use the miraco pro and the small turn table and put the gun on a stand, i applied spray for it to be white, but i keep loosing tracking when the gun rotate and show the barrel.
I even applied marker spot on the gun but its bad.
So has anyone been able to make a good result ?
Also what software can i use to edit the stl file or obj ?
I am a fan of these 3d printed scanning towers.I put miraco scanning markers and use them upright or lying down depending on shape and size of the object for great tracking in marker mode (and even feature mode).
Check the video tutorial of MIRACO to get familiar with all its functions .
Marker scanning mode , uses marker as tracking so your can scan hard to scan objects .
The markers can be used on the bottom surfaces, turntable or on top of the object , you need to use marker mode under the settings when using the markers and not scanning using general mode using markers .
When you set it correct you will see glowing markers with different colors while scanning .
Check your tube tutorials for MIRA O or check the tutorial section here in this forum .
When you using marker mode you will not lose tracking when scanning even a sphere … You getting ghosting and lose tracking because the scanner can’t find any stable tracking points . You need at least 3 markers to be visible all the time while scanning , you don’t take video or pictures of it , it is a different process , the scanner sensors need to be able to read and capture the surface distortions , so maybe just practice a little bit on a regular object , I know it can be frustrating in the beginning , but practice makes it perfect , it is the same with all scanners so don’t give up .
Secure your scanner on a tripod, at 45 angle , change the scanning mode to marker mode , make sure the model is visible in the depth camera sensor , if is too big change the mode to FAR .
i am using the small turn table that was with the miraco, but i have also in my infinite wisdom bought the giant one ( the one that can support 200 kg) i think i may lose track because the small table mat is too small for a gun.
but i am also missing part that for no reason are not being scan even with a good coat of white spray.
that is why i was asking if someone actually scan a gun before, i made a device so the gun is up, but maybe i should let the gun down, do a first scan to get a side, then another to do the other side.
I scanned most all objects possible … yes if the gun is up it will not works with marker mode … you need to put the gun on the side and scan it first at 45 degrees angle , finish one rotation and change the side and scan the bottom then merge them after cleaning the point cloud .
Did magic matt was included in your package ? The black plastic with the market’s on it , the square one .
If not then take a black garbage bag and stick the markers on it closer to the object in irregular pattern .
You need the market’s to be at max 3 cm / 30 mm apart in near mode .
Also do not place the gun direct on the surface , place something below it to slightly elevate it so it don’t touch the ground , it will produce better angles .
Remember to switch to market mode , make sure the marker change colors in the window preview before starting scanning .
The big turntable may shake so make sure the rotation is at 30 sec per one rotation .
You can also use simple cutting board on top of the small turntable to increase the surface area if it is too small for your object .
well i try to scan a Sig Sauer SP2022, so yes on the side its the radius of the small turn table with the circular mat that was with it.
i do have the magic mat, any idea on how to make it flatter since it was folded ? can i use an iron with a piece of cloth to protect it ? or i just leave it under something very heavy.
too bad you can’t set a specific speed for the small table so you know you could set that same speed if you do another similar project after, easier to do on the big one with the remote, should i set is to the slowest speed possible ?
i appreciate the help
i am guessing i will get better result to import scan A and B in the software on pc to clean and stitch them, correct ?
I would not try iron , too hot even on small settings , a steamer would be better , just boil some water in a pot and shake above it , it should release the wrinkles if you don’t have steamer .
The small turntable is 30 sec per 360 , infrared scanners don’t like higher speed than 3O sec per rotation .
And regarding your merging question , yes that is correct .
For a gun to scan i would look for a even surface in black.
A sheet of polycarbonate in black from the store for instance. Look for a sheet double the size of your gun. If the gun has 20cmx15cm use a sheet 40cmx30cm aprox.
Stick some of the included markers in a random pattern on the plate.
Take a look to get them neither to close nor to far away from each other and every triangle of markers should be unique.
Then you can use global marker mode, scan the plate once without the gun, save the markers and then scan the gun on the plate.
This will give you nice coverage of the gun without the need to stick markers directly to the gun.
Move the scanner on the outer shell of the gun, so that the scanner always sees 4 markers from the plate but catches enough detail from the gun.
Scanning it flat from 2 sides should do the trick and then stitching it together.
For the stitching of the 2 scans try to cut the scan so that the rough edges are completely gone, else you will get artifacts for sure. Also be cautios to don’t get points under the actual surface. Sometimes if a frame gets a bit off you end up with points 1mm under the normal surface. This gets modeled as ripples in the finished mesh.
Don’t give up to early. The Miraco is a wonderful yet powerful scanner. Clearly the right tool for the job. But 3d scanning is not an easy task at all. Every user error is visible in the mesh. Take a organized aproach and change always only one variable. Then take a look if your scan gets better or worse. It is time consuming but you will end with an pleasing result.
