The feature mode of Metro X is terrible

I don’t have much experience with 3D scanning recently.

However, I have been in the 3D data field for more than 10 years, and I worked as a researcher in a car company 15 years ago doing measurement work.

Recently, I have been interested in personal scanners again after using competitor’s Raptor and Otter scanners, and I have a great interest in Revopoint and funded MatroX.

However, my experience after testing it for a week is quite terrible.

Of course, please understand that this is my first time using Revopoint products. This product is confusing me in many ways, and I am gradually getting used to Revopoint products.

This is the environment I used and tested. Almost similar problems occur in both environments.

  1. Macbook Pro 14, M3 Max, 32 GB ram.
  2. AMD Ryzen 7700, RTX 4070 SUPER PC, 64 GB ram.

Today, I’m going to show you the problem I’m experiencing in feature tracking mode.

I expected feature tracking to be a function that can be used easily without a marker if it’s done properly, but the result is quite miserable.

If you’re bored while using it, tracking loss occurs.

Of course, in my previous article, I saw that you can use the fusion function in the post-processing work, but it’s quite unfortunate that tracking loss occurs easily even in situations where you don’t move much.

Among the problems I’ve experienced, there’s a big problem where the tracking is lost and copied in the same direction in a low-priced scanner under 200 USD from a third-party product. This part seems to be a problem with the included USB A OTG, so I’m still testing it. I’ll share it with you when I confirm it more in the future.

So I looked for a special operation method for feature tracking, but I couldn’t find any special explanation on the homepage, the included manual, or YouTube videos, and it seems that it just says that it works well.

I think this could be seen as false advertising in some cases. I hope that I just received a defective product or that the OTG or cable is defective as mentioned above.

Also, the marker function seems to work relatively well, and those who are familiar with the existing Revopoint products will not have any problems, but for users like me who expected a more convenient scanner (like other companies’ products), it seems that they will be disappointed or have many errors when using it.

The angle for recognizing the marker seems to be quite narrow (if it is smaller than about 70 degrees, it seems that it is not recognized properly.) Therefore, it seems that proper scanning is possible only after measuring from various angles and combining them so that the marker is recognized almost vertically.

Personally, since I have high expectations for the Revopoint product, I hope that it will be improved through a software update based on the posts I saw on the forum. Or, if the problems I am experiencing are hardware problems, I wonder if there are other reports of similar problems.

If a Revopoint official reads this post, I would appreciate it if you could answer the following.

  1. Is it normal for the feature tracking function to have tracking loss? If so, please tell me specifically how to use it without failure.

  2. If my case seems to be a hardware defect or other cable issue, please let me know how I can test it.

  3. Please answer whether the difficulties I am experiencing can be resolved through software updates.

I wrote a long article for users who are frustrated from the beginning because of the same problem as me. I hope it helps.

I had similar experience with the feature tracking mode.

Maybe the objects which i would like to scan with these mode had not enough “features”. Today i will test an engine from a car…

I also uploaded only the samples included in the least controversial package, and tested it with various other features… Unfortunately, I did not succeed in scanning it properly even once.

However… The results are so bad that I plan to test it thoroughly to see if it continues to occur in the future and upload it to YouTube. (In the meantime, if I get a definite answer that it will be resolved with a software update, I will not upload it.)

I also tried using a turntable, or just holding it and leaving it alone, but only strange symptoms appeared.

That looks very similar to my experience with Miraco/POP. On other hand revopoint horrible experience was the reasony why I have fallen in love with my Raptor.

To be honest I would love to see it working as I am still “waiting” on my unit, but based on my experience with their other scanners, they cannot for some reason manufacture anything even close to Raptor scanning speed/tracking/quality in a way that for 10 scans, 9.5 will be always perfect…

To be honest it was more 2/10 were OKish from Revo, and the reason why I was so hesitant to risk anything for MetroX…

Sadly more and more videos/feedback seems to confirming lots of issues that already were present in their previous “products”.

For feature tracking you really want the scanner to be on the tripod. Swinging it around like in your video above isn’t going to help.
I’ve not had any issue with future tracking at all within the envelope of what is reasonable although I haven’t done a huge amount in that mode.

I didn’t upload it as a video, but when I put it on a tripod and proceeded… a very surprising scene was produced.

The result was like a snake.

I guess it might be a problem with the OTG, so I’ll test it more and upload it. However, I’m so tired of the continuous errors and failures, so I’m going to take a break and try again.

Could it be that you have set a wrong exposure value? This could result in tracking losses, as the features are not visible for the camera.

But honestly I am also a bit disappointed in feature tracking performance. I thought I might have done it wrong, and as I anyway do like the laser tracking mode more, I didn’t care so much. But I will also give it some more mileage then.

With C*REALITY Otter you can swing as much as you want, works wonderfully so I do expect MetroX to work even better than old Otter.

Like wrote before, Otter is wiping the floor with MetroX while Raptor in laser department.

I will probably sell metrox and buy Otter to complement Raptor.

That’s not a normal behavior @soonsoon

I suggest you try to re calibrate your MetroX
And try again .

I spent over 200 hours scanning using MetroX and I never had any issues with .

We don’t care in this community about your experiences with competitors scanners , we don’t use it here and it is against the forum TOS.

You like to have have some help with? You are more than welcome , other way
I will have to remove your posts if you stay off topic.

Hi @soonsoon

  1. It’s not normal for the feature mode to experience tracking loss, which could be due to calibration issues with the scanner.
  2. Please try calibrating your scanner by following these instructions.

You can also contact our customer service at customer@revopoint3d.com for assistance.
  3. This is likely a hardware issue.

I’ve already tried calibration.

And the calibration says there’s no problem.
In this case, is it a hardware problem?

It could be a hardware issue. Our customer service team has already sent you an email. Please stay in touch with them. Thank you.

howd the engine scan go?

The feature tracking here was so far so good, no issues.
Attached screenshot is the raw data. No further improvements. It was just a test if a feature rich object will work.

nice! Ive been meaning to scan my audi’s AVK engine bay… it needs a new airbox/intake piping to the MAF and from the MAF to the throttlebody.

I have the same problem of soonsoon…

wondering how many vertex in this scan with full field mode? and how long does it take for post processing?

What you mean with Vertex?
Fusion tooks arround 2-3min. 13mio Points. I did no meshing currently.
