Scanning small ancient metallic objects with Revo mini

Hi!

I’ve just bought the Revo Mini to 3D scan some Roman coin dies for some university research. I can spray/coat or stick anything on the dies for conservation reasons. The objects are all dark coloured and metallic with fairly smooth surfaces. I’m struggling to get the scanner to pick them up at all and when I have managed to, I am not able to do the top or bottom of the objects.

Any tips on how to deal with this would be much appreciated!

Thanks!!

coins are small enough that you can place markers around the object and scan that way. Post up some screen shots of your setup and we can try and help you out.

Hi @Francscalm

Please try to use the Dark mode , hopefully it will help you to capture the surface , blue full Field light is not easy to capture objects with specifically color surface , as the color absorb it , you should be better off with MetroY Pro in laser mode as it is created to deal with the difficult to scan colors.

How I scan coins ? I put a printed cube in the middle of my mini turntable and then in the side a coin ad 45 degrees and scan the front and small part behind it , after that I clean out the cube before meshing . Then scan again the other side , after both scans are done I use my 3D editing software to combine both sides together .

As Nick mentioned already you can use marker mode as well but keep the coin at an angle and never flat on the turntable or table , lift it slightly from the bottom .
