I’ve a Revoscan RANGE 2 scanner. It has been recently recalibrated. I am trying to scan a fine surface like one side of a coin. I have placed the coin (Australian 50c piece with 12 sides) on a turntable. The coin is in the middle of the turntable. i.e.
High Accuracy,
• Feature Tracking, &
• Dark mode,
• colour scanning - Off.
• scan distance 400mrn
• I allow the turntable to do a full 360 degrees clockwise and get about 430 frames.
• I have the scanner pointing directly at the coin. Turntable at an angle with scanner raised
to be perpendicular to the coin.
The room I’m in is evenly lit
• I have dark plastic in the background to eliminate ‘light noise’
• I have Green bars in the Excellent category on right side.
The best result I get is a very rough image that is of no use to me. I cannot see the detail on the face of the coin at all.
I have seen the Revoscan video that does a very nice scan of a coin but that was with a Revoscan MINI, I have a RANGE 2.
Am I wasting my time trying to scan such fine detail with the RANGE 2 scanner? Has anyone ever successfully scanned a coin with a RANGE 2 and achieved a sharp rendition of the coin surface?
It is impossible to scan a coin using Range 2 , the accuracy is too low for this kind of scanning and details , you need Mini , MIRACO or MetroX to be able to scan a coin.
Sorry but it’s technically impossible.
Range 2 was created to scan big volume objects hence it’s name.
Many thanks for your clear and emphatic response - even though I didn’t want to hear that news. I’ll may be able to exchange the Range 2 for a Mini or at least get a trade-in.
Again, thanks for the advice. My ultimate intended application is to be able to scan fine surface profiles quickly, perhaps with only a couple of single shots. The subject of my application intent will not be able to be moved or placed on a turntable, and may not always be in good light. My application will never need colour. I only need small sections of the subject scanned.
I’ve been delighted with the response and wish I had posted on the forum sooner. I wanted to be sure I wasn’t setting up incorrectly.
Many thanks for the advice.
Just for the fun of it I scanned a US quarter tonight. It is smaller than your coin but not by a whole lot. I sprayed it with attblime permanent grey. For the first 3 scans I used the old little turntable that came with my pop2 and for those I used continuous feature tracking with the crumpled paper around it to make sure it knew it’s whereabouts. The last scan was with the auto turntable mode and metrox. I haven’t calibrated the metrox in quite some time and did a firmware update recently also so it may get a little better. No cleanup on any of them besides generic isolation and overlap. These were also done at a 45 degree angle to the coin, not head on.
Excellent information thanks. It convinces me that with the right scanner, the fidelity of what I need is there. That quality of your last image is perfect for my needs.
Thanks again. Appreciated.
You ask a good question as to whether or not my need is to be mobile when I do the scans. The answer is definitely yes and some scans will be inside and some will be outside.
When I chose the RANGE 2 the specs said it could scan to 0.02 of a millimetre. That was more than enough so I’m not sure why the RANGE 2 doesn’t get that.
I will review the showcase section of the Forum before deciding what next step to take.
You mention 3 options - POP3, MIRACO Plus and MetroX - what about MINI?
Only Mini has accuracy of 0.02mm you may mistake while reading the specification.
And that is the maximum you can get with mobile scanner worldwide
There are no other scanners that can reach that accuracy and still be mobile in the price range.
I did not mentioned Mini because it use blue light, and it is recommended to use 3D spray and you need to have controlled light condition .
Not all color surfaces can be scanned using Mini and mostly only very small objects .
