Scanning knives?

Hi guys,

I need to scan a knife with my Miraco Pro. I bought some scanning spray, but still struggle to obtain a good 3D model.

I already tried using the small turntable and the marker “carpet” with mixed success…

Do you have any advice to scan that kind of thin and reflective object ?

Thanks.

Franck

Hi Frank , you need to have minimal volume to be able to scan it and the sharp side of a knife do not have it .

I recommend you use global markers while scanning and add additional supporting volumes around that you can easy remove after fusing or before fusing if you process your projects on PC .

The supported volumes will help to stabilize the scan overall , but don’t expect the sharp edge to be fully captured , it will have little raw editing.

Use some cubes or any other objects around it . It is not easy process in this case but not impossible .
Keep Miraco steady on a tripod , try single shot frames .

Hi PUTV,

Thanks for your answer and advices.

I’ve already tried to put some volumes around it and put the Miracon on a tripod. I think that using the turntable and put the knife vertically could help, but I need to find some vertical markers sticks to put around the knife.

I keep testing !

If you put it vertically , use single shot mode and move it slowly at 5 degrees with included volume , you can print something if you can for the full length support or just cut stuff from cardboard and with taba create some tubes with edges .

I scanned wings of an insect using single shot mode , it worked

The most issue is when the blade come straight in front of the scanner , it becomes invisible , so the in side tubes may help keep the tracking .

Not easy but not impossible
Looking to see some results
I will see if U can find good workflow for you

What type of knife you are scanning ?

Thanks very much for the help ! I will try that way !

I’m planning to buy some markers sticks, pyramids etc… perhaps the Revopoint kit.

The knife is a simple « kitchen knife » with a black handle and a shiny grey blade.
I put some transparent 3D scanning spart on it to preserve colors (I need it).
