RANGE scanner car scan

No overkill at all. Especially regarding RAM! The more, the better! I wouldn’t go below 32gb and was happy after upgrading to 64gb.

As much as your budged allows , 32GB and i9 will increase the processing speed

The i7 16GB was the minimum I would personally go with Range .
I still process everything anyway on my workstation PC anyway after collecting all my scans if I am on the way or too far to scan on my PC

Thank you for the info and thank you Popupthevolume, I think i7 with 32gb is my option due to pricing range at the moment.

Hello, Newbie here, I saw the Ad and dig into this scanner, I am an Artec Eva user for about 10 years, Looks like the Range would be a killer of Eva…I am also scanning cars for many years…interested to know if i can scan with a laptop and process with a desktop? is the software allow to switch machines?
I am about to press the pledge button… thanks for any feedbacks guys

Yeah you can.

However I processed on a windows 10 tablet PC…

I see no real reason why you couldn’t do everything on the tablet PC. (i7 16gb ram)

Final clean up was on the more powerful system in my office, just for faster processing.

The reason i have to switch to desktop machine for processing is its just a lot quicker with better cpu and ram and graphic card, by the way, does gpu plays for a role in scanning / process in revopoint software? I scan with a surface pro 8 tablet with on board display only

No sadly GPU doesn’t assist with tracking or processing. I wish.

Any idea on the processing time of a panel, say like a door?

Then the good news is you dont need a laptop with a decent gpu at fancy price

A few minutes. Not bad.

Now 3000 frames and about 4-5gb of Cloud point data… and I have had a few take almost 45mins. But that was batch processing the fusion and mesh.

Then it might be a game changer

Oh you definitely can do everything on a 16GB i7 tablet/PC , it just takes little time too process , however Tablet/PC need to be connected to power supply as they lose quick the battery power when processing on full speed , and if you are on the way scanning without ability for powering directly your laptop/PC and have to do lots of scans , there is no time for waiting hours to process , you just scan it and finish it on workstation at home .

Using a phone or android tablet will not give you that option when lots of scans have to be done with quality .

That would be perfectly good for the task !
I got myself i7 16GB 500GB M2 HHD for Range to scan underway ( no fusing or meshing ) just to collect data on the way and 1TB USB stick to scan directly to my USB stick , it is easy later to move my projects from one machine to another if needed .

soooo good! can’t wait to get mine what are the fuse/ mesh settings for this? and high accuracy scan right?

yes General mode high accuracy, fused at 0.1, meshing and alignment was in Cloud Compare meshed at 11, I did try at a few different settings but 11 was the best I think

What was the Fuse and Mesh time (and what is your system’s build description)?

I used an acer Switch 5 tablet PC with 8GB RAM i5 7th gen, meshing took a little while but I didn’t time it as was busy doing other jobs , i could mesh it again and time it, fusing was done in about 5 sections, engine bay, main body, rear floor, front floor and engine area, and rear wheel ( because the suspension moves on the lift ) fusing took approx 5-10 minutes each section again I didn’t sit and time it I just left it to it while I did other jobs in the workshop,

I do know that the engine bay scan meshed in Cloud Compare at 11 using 4.5GB RAM got 14 million triangles and took about 3 minutes on a higher spec desk top PC

Scans like this are going to take a little time and experience to get but the Range is more than capable of doing it and without a fancy computer but a high end PC will do the processing faster, the tablet pc is very convenient with the scanner attached to the top

I normally use the short 2-in-1 cable but also worked with the normal USB cable like this picture shows
