Question Regarding Multiple Software Platforms for Point Cloud Acquisition

Dear RevoPoint Team and Community,

I would like to ask a polite and genuine question regarding RevoPoint’s current software strategy.

From my understanding, multiple different software platforms are used or developed to visualize and process point cloud acquisition. I am trying to understand why this is necessary.

In my experience, larger manufacturers in the 3D scanning industry typically provide one unified scanning suite for all their products. Different scanning technologies—such as structured light, cross-line laser, or single-line laser—are usually handled through device-specific configurations within the same software environment.

This leads me to my question:

  • Why is the approach not to continuously optimize and evolve a single core software platform, while using configurations or profiles for the individual scanners and their specific capabilities?

From a technical perspective, the core capability—point calculation and reconstruction from sensor data—appears to be fundamentally similar, regardless of the specific projection or laser pattern used.

I may be missing key architectural or product-related reasons for this approach, and I would sincerely appreciate clarification from the RevoPoint team or experienced users.

Thank you very much for your time and insights.

Hi @florianm

There are currently only 2 main scanning software , one is reserved for non laser scanners line that don’t use GPU acceleration and can be used on lower level systems and one for laser line scanners that requires high system speed and GPU acceleration.

And that is only difference, the software is rather a remote control for the scanners controlling its firmware/hardware , it is not typical software you can expect.

Each scanner has separate profile that are loaded exclusive for the scanner you are connecting .

The software slowly evolving into one main software as the new lines of scanners are developed and it’s new algorithms.

Not much more about it
