Outdoor scanning

I’m looking for a scanner that will reliably work outdoors. I know that direct sunlight is never going to work reliably, so by ‘outdoor’ I mean a dry overcast/cloudy day, or in shade (gazebo/tree/umbrella etc).

I have an original Range scanner, which for some reason the Revopoint comparison chart shows as compatible with outdoor scanning (along with the POP 3 Plus) but it doesn’t work at all in my tests.

The forthcoming Inspire 2 looks to have some ‘shades’ that can be fitted over the infrared cameras, so that might be an option. But I’m not sure if the Inspire 2 scan quality will be as good (or preferably better than) the Range as it’s very cheap! I absolutely hope that I’m wrong

The new MetroY looks like it would be the perfect bit of kit but it’s not listed as compatible with outdoors scanning. I wonder if Revopoint have considered some ‘shades’ like the Inspire 2 to allow at least the full-field scanning to work outdoors?

Are there any ‘hacks’ to help NIR scanners work outside? I have already made some ‘shades’ for my Range, which improved the IR sensors from being completely flooded, but it wasn’t good enough for real work.

Some people have pointed me at the competitor Otter, but as I already have a Range and like the RevoScan software, I’m keen to stick with Revoscan if possible.

All recommendations and discussions appreciated

Hi @tomg

You can’t filter out infrared light outdoors because the scanners project also infrared so that would make no sense .

I did scanned outdoors with Range 1 and it was on sunny day , the sculpture was inside gazebo , I used dark object settings and set exposure to Auto.

Inspire 2 have an infrared laser mode , it is not as fast as Full Field so it take slightly longer to capture proper the surface . But it is much stronger NIR compared to just class 1 NIR that Range uses.

Inspire 2 laser mode can scan surfaces that Range can’t .

I still waiting for the final public product to test it out , so maybe at the end of September I can say more about in the direction you are interested in.

MetroY have only laser modes and not recommended to scan outdoors until it is after sunset or dark, yet you still need your laptop/computer standby.

Thank you for the suggestion about the “Dark object” setting for outdoor use. I will try that.

I have ordered an Inspire 2, so like you, I look forward to testing it in different situations. And outdoors, of course!

I seriously can’t wait for INSPIRE 2 , I prefer it more than POP3 , plus great scanner on a budget that deliver.

The infrared laser mode will be the deal breaker , especially if you have 2 types of materials like for example wood with metal , hopefully there will be an option to switch while scanning or at least continue scanning with different mode.

Very excited, the end of September can’t come soon enough.

I will mainly be using it for stone monuments (outside!) but if it’s as good as it claims to be I’ll probably be using it for a lot more. Excited that the fused point size can be as low as 0.05mm. Laser mode will be a bonus

It will be in my pocket everywhere I go , my daily companion because you never know what you come across. For all assets collectors it is a must have on the go pocket scanner.

The infrared laser mode is what it will make it more powerful from the rest of the infrared scanners.
