Mini 2 scanning advice

Hello all,

I am new to this and would like to have your advice on how to better scan the attached.

I am using the mini 2, initial scan with high accuracy and fusing it normally at 0.15. So very simply scan with high accuracy, then fusing it 0.05 to 0.15, no simplifying or smoothing then meshing it. Now this is where I think I struggle. I always thought that meshing at 8.0 would give the best result and it is probably the case, but perhaps too much details and sometimes it appears that meshing so high it will generate data that do not exist? I would need to get the logic of this? I also tried to mesh at 6.0 and 7.0 and it seems that no extra details are generated, the outcome is slightly less refinement but better overall outcome.

What I would like to understand is, based on the attached images, how would you judge how to scan the statue, and how scan, fuse and mesh respectively? I know that there should be a lot of trial and error but is there anything you do first, initial thinking and more?

If I scan at high accuracy, then fuse at 0.15, what should be the meshing after?

The statue is made of ivory, although ideally white, it appears to have some polishing to it, roughly 8-10 cm in height.

I am using a mini turnable table, with 70% max speed, the lighting is normal indoor. Distance from the object pretty much excellent all the time and exposure of the subject is good with very faint burning highlights.

I have tried doing 2-3 scans but also managed to scan one bit, stop and scan another bit, which is giving very similar results as to when do 2-3 merging scans.

I know I can achieve better refinement especially for the small details.

I will be posting more pictures of the final scan.

What are your thoughts? Thank you all

It sounds like you’re on the right track! For meshing, try setting it between 6.0 and 7.0 rather than 8.0 to avoid capturing too much noise. For the fuse setting, 0.15 works well, but you could try light smoothing at a low level (like 0.05) after fusing to clean up any minor artifacts, especially since the statue is polished.

Hello Sanjay,

Thanks for your reply.

I’ll try that and see if I get better results. Do you know what effectively the x1.5 and x2 does? Will I be able to get better details from the scans by implementing the x1.5 or x2? Or this is just something that allows you to get closer to see if you have scanned everything?
