Mac / iOS - There has to be a better way!

Well, got the USB 3 to lightning adaptor. The iPhone 11 Pro doesn’t seem to provide enough power the POP scanner. Bummer! I have seen other posts about this issue and work-arounds. I think I’ll wait for the Mac scanner software. Revopoint should be ashamed of themselves for making false claims and should offer a full refund, including shipping.

It seems to me that they are very responsive. If we wanted a fully developed product with all the software in place, this would not have been a good choice. I think they are going t get there.

@Engpete I’d be curious if your results would have been different if you had the apple one. However, Revopoint should of provided a recommended list of compatible devices if they even did a Q/A testing. Like we should know how to use / what we need to use this device already. Its another example of how they have dropped the ball. It should never be this difficult for users to use a device that is suppose to be so simple. iPhone’s are one of the most popular if not thee most popular phone in the world. There was either very little or no testing done. I would of rather waited another few months for them to have it done right.

@mrehmus I hope they will be able to do what’s right but I wonder how much they can actually achieve based on engineer decisions. As it stands they have not addressed if a firmware update to change the connection protocol is possible (which to me is one of the biggest problems with this product) but rather allowing you to change the name and password on the software that will hopefully be available by may 20th. it still doesn’t solve the issue of people needing to change phone plans to acquire Hotspot capability. Which is a higher premium (ranging from $10-$75usd depending on data caps with AT&T) who do not have hotspot on their phone plan. Again I must sound like a broken record but to me unless they can change it so my phone can connect this to the POPs wifi, this product was a big miss on its selling point of portability.

I agree with you completely.
Details on my previous post… when I plug into the iPhone I get a green POP light for approx. 2 sec. then red light with a humming sound. I assume it’s a power issue. When I plug into my iMac USB port I get a green light, then orange, blue, and finally stays on green. This looks like the POP has sufficient power to keep it on and ready to scan.

I added a Wifi Router with POP/12345678 to get the device in my home network. That worked and the Handy Scan software on my iPhone finds the camera and connects. However the Windows Handy Scan software can’t find the camera. Can this be easily solved?

Good point there, WiFi access should be added to Windows (and Macof course) App  would make it more flexible. but good to see this works without hotspot mode

Agreed.

Anybody who backs a Kickstarter and expects everything to be right and on time is kidding themselves. There are some people out there that should only buy from their friendly local Apple Store and gamble at their favorite casino.

The rest of us can take our chances with products with teething pains and sometimes we will lose our money. C’est la vie!

Yup, it was taking a chance and so far, it seems to have paid off. Microsoft Windows and Apples OS were prime examples of painful products at first.

Great idea. I set up my wi-fi access point with POP/12345678. Plugged my POP scanner into a powered USB port. Connected my iPhone to same network. Handy Scan doesn’t see the scanner. Can you elaborate on your setup?

I added the router as a transparently to my existing network, just with the new POP Wifi. iPhone is unchanged. (Just more complicated). But I don’t see a reason why your setup shouldn’t work.

What happens if you enter the IP address of the scanner in Safari on your iPhone. Can it connect?

I tried the Safari (and Chrome) browers, no go. I searched the POP network with Fing app and it showed only the router and my iPhone connected. I guess I’ll just have to wait for the Mac OS software and see if that works.

Did anyone tried with an iPad Pro ? the one with usb-c … I did, with no much success. The app is just a living bug, so ugly and not functional. There is no way to connect via usb, it’s just impossible to select the option, the only one is to select wifi, and like others says it’s simply UNACCEPTABLE TO CHANGE THE DEVICE NAME and having to set such an obvious password. I do understand there is solutions if we have windows or android maybe, but if I have none of those, how do I do ? I’am running an M1 Mac, so no chances. I had the device from kickstarter like others, but I do remember it was a stretch goal to have Mac and iOS support. If the Mac is coming, fair enough but what about iOS/iPadOS ? Is there a plan to improve it for both iPhone and iPads ?

@eventhorizons Welcome to my thread. Teething pains at least means its working for you. I very happy for you if it does, sincerely. Might I ask are you a mac/ios user?

To address your comment:

  1. I’ve backed 22 Projects Im not exactly new to kickstarter so I know what to expect.
  2. I don’t expect it to be right/perfect/or on time. However I do expect to have a product that is somewhat functional at any capacity. Which many of us Mac/iOS users are struggling with vs others.
  3. I have received several products late in kickstarter due to issues and as I have stated “I would of rather waited another few months for them to have it done right.” and by “right,” I mean able to use.

That worked for me too - Not Connected

Many users can’t connect to iPhone successfully is because of this step. After they revise the POP from “off” to 'Not connected", it works.
We had revised our manual about this point, and for the App reminder, we will revise it as soon as possible.

Hi,

I’m exactly in the same situation.
Really disappointed by this very bad customer experience.
Thinking about next actions.
Revopoint, please respect your customers!
Regards

Yes this was a bit of confusion for many users, so its great the manual was updated to help solve those who have the hotspot feature.

However, please do not neglect/write-off the many users who can’t connect to iPhone successfully because of the hotspot connection method (which is a premium feature on many phone plans) vs phone connecting to the POP’s wifi. I have asked if this is able to be addressed in a firmware update or not and Im sure someone from your team should be able to answer this? Just asking for a glimmer of hope not an immediate resolution.

I love the quality of Apple products and how they are designed for anybody to be able to use and to minimize the learning curve.

That being said, I cannot tolerate how Apple works hard to lock you into their ecosystem and control all aspects of the use of the products that they rent you. If Apple does not offer a product or service, then they will usually allow 3rd parties to implement it within their system. However, once they introduce a new product or service, then any competitors are either explicitly frozen out or the experience is degraded significantly.

As you know, writing an App for IOS is not as simple as porting it from Android. Apple makes the barriers to writing Apps fairly high, such that I do not envy the developers.

As an experienced Kickstarter backer, you are aware that things are sometimes going to be rushed and are going to lack, especially at first. I truly hope that they are able to get the IOS version working better, because there are so many of those users out there. If I were them, I would be using this to springboard into my next product and having IOS support substantially opens up the market!

“If you can’t open it, you don’t own it.” - Unknown

@eventhorizons Yes apple has strict about apps and their is some give and take for their ecosystem that has its own pros/cons. However, that’s nothing new.

My concern and i standby it to the end is that it is such a standard that your phone whether apple or not connects to a product that its more shocking and odd that Revopoint did the hotspot way. Also more shocking apple would allow it for the name change reason whether you can change it from the computer software or not. I feel like having your phone connect to a device is so common that i bet its open source scripts for developers to use.

However tomorrow hopefully the mac software is released

I just received my POP but will not have time to play with it for a while, so hopefully I’m not speaking out of turn here. I’m basing what I’m saying on my understanding of what others have written, not on any personal experience with the device.

It’s very common for a device (think Amazon Echo or any number of WiFI cameras) to use a “hotspot” (WAP) mode so you can connect your phone (or other device) to it for the purpose of configuring it. Once configured, the device reboots and connects to your local Wifi network. I have never personally encountered a device that wants your phone to be the hotspot and I agree with you that is a “kludgey” way of doing it! Since the POP is a field portable device and may not be near your network, I would think that the POP would simply stay in WAP mode and your phone would connect to it like any other.

Good luck on the new IOS releases!
