Leave your feedback & suggestions on the Revo Scan 5

Revoscan 5 (5.07.320) and the Range make the scanning of plaster foot casts very easy and fast.
More than enough details for this purpose with standard accuracy, and much easier than scanning with the POP1 or 2.
(I now leave my 15K laser scanner in the closet because my range is better and faster!)
But what I really miss is that the location where I store my results, and the file type (.stl/.obj/.ply) are not sticky, so I have to browse and select the location and filetype every save again.
Also for the settings like mesh quality etc. it would be nice to have them sticky.

what do you mean by sticky?

That once you have chosen a certain setting, like the saving location or other setting, it stays that way so you do not have to choose the same setting every time again.

yeah, remembering last path. i had noticed that changed too, it is very annoying

I totally agree with this suggestion , when you scan just one object it is ok, but if you scan multiple angles of an object and the settings are set to standard each time you start new scan in the same project getting little bit on my nerves .

The Depth and RGB settings should also not change until you close the software at least , considering it is still a session .

It is basically impossible to have the same white balance while scanning collection of objects in color .

And of course the saving path of your exported scans that changes back to the original each time .

And last but not least the range settings , that reset each time you start new scan in the same project .

There should be a list of parameters that you can set all your favourite settings so each time you open the software everything is already setup ready to scen, this would also allow you to have multiple scanning templates for the different scanners and or setups that you most often use

Eventually it would be great to extend this settings idea to “easy”, “intermediate”, and “expert” modes like Prusa slicer is set up that gives us more functionality/control over meshing, merging, and PC/Mesh editing.

Also adding primitives or other mesh editing tools like zbrush or others would be cool too (this would be nice to have) would rather see more features that CC has in a more scanning oriented workflow.

From my experience, the merging and registering features of CC are much more powerful than what is currently used in RS.

Another random suggestion - however it’s for the scanner firmware.

I am assuming that the scanner hardware is using the default signal processing and data from the gyro chip. This is okay for cellphone type applications but leaves much to be desired for precision tracking.

All scanners have at least 3 on board sensors (the gyro, the rgb camera, and the infrared/blue light sensors). I think it would be extremely powerful and best-in-class if revopoint developed a kalman filter using the data received by all 3 sensors (or at least 2/3 sensors). In addition, received the raw data of the gyro and applied a better DSP function to the raw data. This would dramatically increase the tracking accuracy. As far as I know the hardware on board should be able to handle this as I’ve heard of it being implemented on arduinos and esp32 boards.

For those not familiar it takes 2 or more sensors of varying accuracy that are measuring the same thing and combines their readings to a more accurate reading. So in the scanning case, the gyro and cameras could be used in conjunction of one another to increase positional accuracy. Where the cameras measure acceleration/velocity through the changing of pixels.

Why no auto modes for the turntable in Revo Scan 5? This was a primary selling point of the machine.

The way it worked in RS4 was not efficient, however if you use Android there is an app that will give you the proper auto function that the software is missing at this moment .

One important mesh editing improvement.
Plesae give back separate option for smoothing edges and
noises removal on flat surfaces with preservation of sharp edges.
It’s an important difference in a small objects geometry reconstruction.

It is under Edit/Mesh , it is called Smoothing but in reality it is noise remover function

Times = Level

Strength= Weight Map

You can remove the picks and valleys from your surface preserving the main structure of your model , since this function works based on overall smoothness and it’s differences .

I feel in my projects that Smoothing is not exact equivalent to RevoStudio function. Correct me if I’m wrong but after Smoothing function (despite of any settings) I definitely see smoother edges, not only bump smothing.

It should be the same function , I will make comparison to see if anything changed .

The denoiser function is the same in both Revo Studio and Revo Scan 5.0.8
with the difference that RS 5 have a different surface shader what makes things looks less sharp than in Revo Studio

tested many times on a different settings, RS5.0.8 actually perform slightly better denoising than Revo Studio as more finer details are preserved.

Hi,

About Revoscan 5 Android app:
I would like to be able to create several scans in the same project, as i can in the Windows app.
I find myself creating new projects for each scan and it is a mess to work with for post processing and merging.

Or, have i missed something and it is possible somehow?

/Thomas

Hi Thomas , you cant have multiple scans in one project on mobile app as it would consume all virtual memory you have available for scanning .

There is an app created by our Beta Tester @X3msnake that allows you to merge multiple projects from mobile app into one project : Release RSPM_v1.230526 · X3msnake/revostudio5_file_merger · GitHub

if you have any issues or questions regarding this app please ask or post here : Revostudio5 - Project Merger App

Hi, and thanks for the answer.

Well i can without problems have several projects on my phone, should it really consume more memory to have them as several scans in the same project?
I guess it is up to having a good architecture inside the app that manages how things are loaded and unloaded to/from memory when opened.

I will test the project merger app, thank you for the tip.

Nothing is written in a stone , as the mobile phone improving , there may be a new version in the future that allows that .
I would simply prefer to have an option that allows me to merge selected mobile projects into one project in Revo Scan , without the needs to use second hand app for that , and problem solved for all .
