Long and short is my dental desktop scanner has bitten the dust and frankly it wasn’t very good to begin with. I am looking at either a Miraco or maybe a Pop 3 Plus. The scan subject will be gypsum dental models, dental wax ups, and 3d printed dental models. What I am wondering is what is the ideal environment to set up the scanner and turntable for these scanners? My desktop scanner had its own light sources and blocks out most other lights, has a black anodized background behind the scan subject, and a set distance, so in my mind I’m thinking that is kind of the type of environment I should be trying to replicate, but I actually don’t know. What are your guys thoughts?
I don’t recommend MIRACO or POP3 for scanning dental models, go with MetroX for best results or MINI 2
It will give you the best results .
You can scan in darkness or in controlled light environments, making sure you are away from Windows and direct windows lights or direct sun light.
Make sure your environment lighting don’t use any light that produces string yellow tones, preferable cool toned LED lighting if needed or dimmable environment lighting to avoid interior on with the projectors blue light , since yellow tones absorbing blue .
Thanks for the input. Of those two options, what do you see as the pros and cons of either?
Not much to debate, just the resolution and accuracy is just better , infrared scanner usually create some noise and that is normal , blue light scanner don’t and for dental scanning it is preferable to get the best smooth surface and details without artificial noises as much as possible.
Blue light scanning is just more detailed and that what you need.
MINI 2 actually is perfect for it , but MetroX offers higher resolution results so much better in Auto mode .
Here example of scanned acrylic model dentures with MetroX by me in Auto mode
That looks as good as any of the medit units I’ve used. I’ve had some experience with a blue light scanner in the past (BSB DS-3D) that struggled to be able to scan wax rims. Have you experienced any of that with those two models?
Yes wax runs are an issue for infrared and MINI 2 .
MetroX can handle it better , also great to scan full acrylics , gumps or teeth itself.
Both materials are absorbing so any infrared or regular blue light scanner will have issue.
But there is a solution , you can always get fine 3D spray , mostly the transparent are great , it just mate slightly the surface what is already great if you get issue and don’t add to the dimensions.
But for scanning plaster casts they are ideal.
So I guess MetroX will be your answer if you going for the hard scanning surfaces.
You’ve been a lot of help. Thank you so much.
No problem , if you need anything don’t hesitate to ask.
