Want to update to a new scanner

Ok. I own and enjoy my POP3 and have been using terrestrial laser scanners (Leica) and point clouds for the better part of 5 years. I know that scanning glass / reflective material and the color black is difficult, but did I read correctly that the Miraco Plus and the Metrox can both scan black?..if so, which one does it better? It seems like everytime I need to scan something it’s always black. I also need something that will scan from the size of a couch to the size of a GI Joe.

Hi @MrMold666

MetroX maximum volume is 1 cubic meter, it produces very dense data scans and is not used for scanning couch sizes objects

Black don’t mean color here , black means material , since you use s light scanning technology some materials absorbing lights and in most cases they are black , black rubber , or black plastic because they are absorbing light .

MetroX is best in handling black surfaces so far from all scanners .

Miraco is infrared scanner , less powerful and that should be not a comparison here because I feared scanners do tend to create slightly noise on the surface and that’s it’s nature , Structured Light scanners that use blue light create smoother surfaces .

So make your decision but based on the size of your scans first and what is mostly important , don’t get MetroX for big things unless you going to scan it with very small section , have very powerful workstation and plenty of time to edit it all .

Or go with MIRACO and forget about everything I said about MetroX .

Remember black cotton do not absorb infrared light , but black nylon do .

Hmmmm. Then the MetroX might indeed be my next scanner. I primarily have used my scanner to scan broken parts for repair and most of the time the material is dark which makes scanning a pain. I might not necessarily need to scan a couch, but something that can scan moderately large things (chair sized) to small parts (figurines, etc.) would be ideal. I do have experience with laser scanners, so the MetroX might be less of a learning curve. Thank you for the info.
How powerful of a computer will the MetroX need? I have a computer built to handle huge point clouds (full buildings) that will most definitely handle it, but I tend to use my Surface pro when I’m away from my desktop which isn’t quite as robust.

You can’t use surface pro with MetroX you need minimal i7 12th gen and minimal 32GB however preferred 64GB and up and RTX not less than 3050

However Surface Pro will run Auto turntable mode and Full Field as I tried by quickly switch the mode .

I use i9 10th generation , 64GB RAM RTX 3090 to 24GB VRAM

Sone scans can take more than 32GB of RAM since MetroX produce dense scans that never before .

For the parts your mentioned I think MetroX will be your best choice .

The KS is still running for the next 24h so still a chance to get good discounts, unless you waiting for the store release in December.

Ha! Well, I thought my PC was powerful enough. I’m still running an RTX 2070 super with 32GB of ram. I’m going to need to do some upgrading here first. We shall see.

If you looking for a very fine details 32GB maybe just too short for objects with lots of details the size of 7-8 inches by 4-5 inches

All depends of the fusing and meshing settings . And with a 175 milion poly mesh even a 3090 ti can get little choppy .
