Feature requests for WiFi operation

I have just received my new MetroY Pro. As it doesn’t have a Mac version, I could only use it with my windows desktop. I had no issues with the wired mode, but unfortunately i couldn’t do many other things:

* I have no bluetooth, so while I could put the object on a turntable and spin it with the buttons, the scanner kept jerking around in preview. I understand why this happens, since it’s always assuming it’s the scanner that’s moving and not the object. This should be an easy fix that would help when using any other turntable or manually moving the object while the scanner is stationary - which i would say is actually preferrable in a lot of cases. Some checkbox that would stop using the accelerometer data and allow me to rotate the object while keeping the scanner on a tripod should be easy to do. I didn’t notice any real impact to the scan data itself because of it, so it seems it only affects the preview.

* Despite my PC being in the same network as my home WiFi, I couldn’t scan wirelessly. If the scanner could connect to an existing network, i could keep my PC on the wired connection but still use the scanner in wireless mode. I understand that this introduces another network hop, but if I have a WiFi 6 router and a 2.5Gbps cable connection, that should be plenty enough for the full scanner bandwidth. In the meantime, I ordered a wifi card for the PC; in fact, that will allow me to keep the internet connection open, which is another reason why using the same network would be beneficial.

* Seemingly for the same reason, i.e. not being connected to scanner hotspot, I couldn’t connect the Android Mirror app to the desktop app. Even though the phone can easily communicate with the PC, and even though the phone (as I understand it) doesn’t talk to the scanner at all, just the destkop app, I can’t set up mirroring in such a case. This is the least understandable limitation to me, and one that should be similarly easy to remove.

So, to sum up, my requests are:

  • Allow the turntable to be used without bluetooth by manual operation.
  • Allow the scanner to connect and communicate over an existing wifi network.
  • Allow the Mirror app to communicate to the PC app over a different method than just the scanner hotspot.

I’ll send the link to this post to customer@revopoint3d.com as well.

Scanner can be used prefectly with turntable without bluetooth. It seems youve done something incorrectly. Possible item does not have enough define features to track.

I and many others have no problem using host mode.

I believe host mode is used as its a faster connection for the amount of data that is sent.

Mirror apps works without the scanner. So not sure what problem you are having there. As long as the phone and pc are on the same network it works. No scanner needed.

ad 1. I could scan fine without bluetooth, but the view kept jerking. This was annoying to watch progress on and I see no other explanation rather than accelerometer data mismatch to what the cameras are seeing.

ad 2. I am not saying that the hotspot mode is bad. I’m saying that having another option would be beneficial for some use cases. It doesn’t really use “faster” connection; the overall speed depends on all devices in the system. If you have a WiFi 6 router and a computer connected to it via a cable, that could have higher throughput than a laptop with WiFi 5 connected directly to the scanner, for example.

ad. 3 That’s good to know. I was having problems connecting to it, but maybe it was something else. At first I had issues with Windows firewall, but once I disabled the firewall i started getting immediate connection failures rather than hangs. I’ll need to investigate this further.

  1. Single frame/ auto turntable mode? If so then that is because single frame/auto turntable mode is only 2 to 3 frames. You do not want to use this mode if you are not using bluetooth controls. Simply put it in full field mode. Pause the turntable and set up everything. Then start the turntable.

  2. True on that but it just provides better connection when they can make a direct connection to the PC/laptop.. I know all the older scanners did this, but with the new ones its just much more data.

  3. yes just check on your firewall and other network settings. The RevoMirror software is a fork of Sunshine and moonlight remote view. Make sure to have the PC revo mirror running in the background. Or you can install and setup Sunshine its made by LizardByte . Then you can easily use the Revomirror android/ios app.

I also agree. Allowing the scanner to connect to an existing WiFi network like on older scanners would be a godsend! I also understand that its much more data, but moving from wifi 5 on older hardware to the new wifi 6 stuff shouldn’t be that much of a bottleneck when scanning.
