Before I buy a POP: small glossy figurines, and parts that only exist in old photos

Hi everyone, pre-purchase question, hope that’s OK here.

As a hobby I repair small porcelain and resin figurines for friends and family. Quite often a piece is missing (a hand, a hat brim, the tip of a tail) and I sculpt a replacement by eye and print it. It works, but it’s slow, so I’m looking at a POP 4 or a MINI to speed up the parts I can scan.

Things I’d like to understand before buying:

  1. Most figurines are 4 to 8 cm and glazed. How much scanning spray do you typically need, and does it hide fine detail at that size?
  2. Would a POP capture enough detail to model a 2 cm replacement part from the mirrored side (e.g. scan the left hand, mirror it for the missing right one)? Or is that really MINI territory?
  3. Sometimes the missing piece is the only one of its kind and broke years ago, so all I have are old photos of the figurine when it was intact. How do people handle that? Scan the rest and sculpt the missing part over it, or has anyone had luck combining a scan with something reconstructed from photos?

Any example scans of small glazed objects would be great to see. Thanks!

Hi!
Great scanning purpose!
Do you have am example photo of such an object you usually scan?

Hi @JosephineM

To scan resin or porcelain you will need 3D spray and very fine one, best for that purpose is 3D liquid fir scanning very small elements places only on the areas that are glossy or translucent like resin .

I would recommend Mini 2 for that purpose and single shot mode .
POP4 is great for scanning 8 cm figurines but if you are missing very small parts , Mini 2 would works better .

How people use scanning in this case ? They scan the figurine , import into a computer , model the missing parts , print it , then make mold of it to cast in porcelain or resin.

If using picture you need to model it based on picture , scan will not help you even if POP 4 can scan a photo, but if you scan the rest , you can model it on computer in other software like Zbrush or Blender
