Useful Tool: Auto-Orient you 3D scanned STL's (feedback welcome)

Hi all,

I picked up a MetroX Pro a little while back and have really enjoyed getting into 3D scanning — the scanner’s been excellent. The one snag in my workflow was orientation: I can clean up and mesh a scan fine, but when I import it into SolidWorks it comes in at some arbitrary angle, and I’d lose time manually rotating and aligning it before I could start modelling.

So I built a tool to skip that step, called WARELAB Mesh. It automatically detects datum planes, cylindrical features and symmetry and aligns the part to a clean coordinate system in a few seconds — so the file imports into CAD already oriented and I can get straight to modelling. It can run fully offline on Windows too.

It’s an independent project I have taken on. Everyone can get a 7-day free trial so you can run your own scans through it first!

Demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqzl6RhR-jg — and there’s more info at warelab.co.uk.

It’s been a genuine time-saver for me, and I’d really welcome anyone giving it a go and telling me what works, what doesn’t, and what would make it more useful. Cheers.

George Ware.

Thank you George !

SolidWorks has always been pretty lacking when it comes to working with 3D scans, that is why I use Rhino 3D. It would be great if Revoscan had a basic Scan alignment tool such as the one that you have described.

Could you make a port for Mac?

Hello! I can look into this yes

Sounds good - I will need to try out Rhino 3D.

Have you given WARELAB Mesh a try?? There is an updated version with some new features out now

WARELAB MESH

I’ll be glad to test it on MacPro M4 and purchase if it works well.

Hi George,

I downloaded and tried your WARELAB Mesh, it is very nice for a stand alone App !

The automatic analysis and orientation works very well for simple objects.

The Plane from 3 points method works well for everything else.

Rhino 3D has a command called “Orient3Pt” which works the same way.

You have done a great job with your software !

Perhaps you could license your software to be included inside RevoScan ???

Hi,

Thanks for the positive feedback, much appreciated. Have recently added so new features like 3D Mouse support/Axis flipping along with other things so it’s coming along nicely!

haha I’d definitely be interested in a discussion with Revopoint!
