So far, so bad and so disappointing

I posted in the Reddit earlier as well, but since i would love to see this resolved, I wanted to post in the forums as well.

I cant get a single scan to work on the MetroX - not so much the HW, but the Software. I have had every Revo scanner except 1, so Ive used Revopoint SW for some time now. I have no issues with the standard Revopoint and I use it heavily with my Miraco scanner (which, so far, I do like better than my MetroX).

What happend to me in the MetroX software is that it will never rendered a full scan - manaully or one-click. If will crash at some point and simply close out the MetroX software.

It also tends to crash and close whenever I try to connect the turntable to my Bluetooth. That did work 2 or 3 times, and of those successful connections, 1 scan completed. The others were about 90% complete and the program would just suddenly close.

I use the Miraco and MetroX on the same laptop - a Razer Blade 15 2022 model) with 64 GB of RAM, 8 TB of NVMe (2x4TB) and a RTX 3080 - it can handle the power requirements.

Any ideas on resolving the crashes?

That’s the worst crashing I’ve heard of. I wonder if there is some library in Windows it doesn’t like or something. Hopefully they get back to you quickly and can diagnose it.

I can say that my older machine, with a fresh Windows 11 and all updates is more crashy than a new 14th gen laptop. Very new software can be like that sometimes. The same older machine drops the connection to the turntable all the time as well.

Of course, you can’t expect everyone to have the latest gear. I’m sure they will get that sort of thing figured out.

Mine will exit suddenly too, but nothing like that. I’ve gotten several good scans from the MetroX, but I have to admit, there’s some pitfalls like sudden exits. TBE w/ a brand new product I suppose.

Hoping so - The “original” scanning software always worked fairly well - MetroX has been very frustrating. I got one scan in between all the normal sudden shutdowns of the software and if I try to do aything to that in the software (ie: Mesh it / Fill Holes / etc…) - it is 100000x slower than the other Revoscan for the “older scanners”. I have been running a hole check in a model now for 3 hours and its still going. I have the same speed with GPU enabled or if its disabled. It’s really crazy.

Yeah - I get the new HW side of things, and I know they needed to break out the MetroX features from the original Revoscan - but I would expect a little more stability than this - I may have a 5-10% success rate of working in Revo for new scans - if I edit a model, it doesnt seem to have the crashing issues (or I should say sudden closing of the app, with no errors) - but actions are SOOOOO slow in it - it’s unusable with the performance I am getting.

I use this Laptop for a lot of 3D work - sure, the Razer Blade is now 3 years old, but with 8 cores / 16 threads, a RTX 3080, 64GB of RAM, and Samsung NVMe’s, the laptop is still a fair powerhouse or the work I do. I do plan on a new laptop / 2-in-1 in 2025 - Asus has some nice things coming out and since Gaming Laptops rarely have touchscreens anymore, it’s getting tough to find any options for what I need

I run a Dell workstation class laptop w/ a quadro A4500 card, i9, 64gb and w11 and am not having the same experience at all. I would say that for software that was probably rushed out the door it works pretty well. Very much looking for updates in stability and features.

I’m going to do a showcase thread here in a few min

Being slower than the older version is expected. The scanner has significantly higher data rates. There is a lot more data to process. That said, it’s not currently utilizing the hardware very well. I expect that will improve.

New laptop should not be the fix for this. Yours should work fine. Following.

Hi @Robotica72

I’m sorry for the inconvenience you’ve experienced. We need your help to provide some information to assist us in analyzing the cause of the software crash.

Please help us by providing:

  1. The software version
  2. The entire folder for RevoScan5MetroX

You can find it using the following steps:
(1) Open the RevoScan MetroX software and enter a project.
(2) Click on “Help - Feedback” in the top left corner.

(3) Click “view” to locate the log file, then go back to the previous level and package the “RevoScan5MetroX” folder to send it to us.

After reading the microscopic Quick Start Guide (a real challenge for those of us seniors with glasses!), seeing the minimum requirements are 32 GB RAM with 64 GB RAM recommended, and seeing that my Lenovo laptop has only 20 GB RAM, I last night ordered a new laptop Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i with 32 GB RAM and an Intel i9 13th gen processor. So there’s another $2K spent. (Fortunately, money grows on trees here… LOL) I will add that the self-test performed by RS MetroX indicated that 20 GB was sufficient, but that I may experience some lag.

Thing is, I could not find a 64 GB laptop for anything that might be construed to be affordable. For that matter, my new Dell Inspirion 3030 desktop systems also have 32 GB RAM and RS MetroX says that that is sufficient. I guess time will tell. Then again, I don’t expect to be scanning objects larger than 30-45 cm in size.

I wonder if these minimum and recommended systems are really necessary for those of us who aren’t scanning automobile bodies and other large objects. I realize that the RS MetroX software itself is going to require a certain minimum working RAM, but is 64 GB RAM really recommended for scanning objects, say, less than 12 in/30 cm in size? For that matter, is 32 GB RAM really necessary for scanning that size object?

To me, it seems the requirements for the MetroX are a bit outlandish, but maybe I’m being unreasonable in my expectations. Food for thought…

I have not found 32GB to be an issue.

Thanks - I tried through the MetroX software - I zipped up that Directory and all sub-folders and attached it in the feedback form, but it dosent seem to want to send. Clicking send keeps failing with an error box that says “Failed to send”.

(Im really having little luck with the MetroX app  )

Out of curiosity, do you have your new laptop yet & has it made a difference? Mine is just below spec & I’m just wondering if it’s worth dropping another 2k on a laptop I don’t otherwise need…

Hey Bruce - Not yet, I dont think I will until the new models are shown at CES next week. I need some specific specs and while there are a few out there that meet most of my specs, the memory on most is too low and cant be upgraded.

Im in the market for a new Laptop, so it’s good timing for me - but my laptop specs are pretty good and I dont see why they would cause the program to crash like it has been. When it crashes there are no errors, nothing - the app just closes instantly with nothing.

I might install MetroX on my Asus Ally X - it has a Ryzen Extreme but only 24GB of RAM - but I would like to see how it reacts overall.

100% agree that it has more data - but There is no reason that scanning for holes in a new scan should take hours to find the holes and then another few hours to close the holes. I have simplified the model in a few other attempts and the same speed issues still occur - hours for finding holes / etc.

I haven’t received the new laptop yet (due here tomorrow - Sat) so I don’t yet know. I take it from the comments here that the software has some bugs in it. I should have added in my original post that the current laptop I tried is about 1½ yrs old - not sure if that makes a difference or not.

I will let you know when I use the machine for a short bit how things are going.
