Revo Scan 6 - v6.3.0 - Meshing quality decreased?

Hi, whilst using the newest Revo Scan 6 Update (6.3.0.971), i have noticed a decreased quality in the meshing of scans compared to the previous release (6.2.3.875).

It seems that the option to reduce or increase the point distance has been removed.

I also noticed that the amount of vertices and mesh surfaces has drastically decreased from 6.2.3 (for this scan from around 549763 vertices to 333357 vertices and the mesh surfaces from 1099522 to 665663)

Did anybody else notice these issues?

What option you talking about ?

Fusing point distance option still available
Reducing point distance available
Meshing resolution option still available
Reducing mesh resolution still available

Maybe you just click the Fusing button and got recommended settings in place of manual ?

If that was the issue , you may rescan that object again and compare, re- calibrate the scanner with the new software to reflect it’s new algorithms , meshing /fusing old project not always deliver the best results .

I always do a full calibration after each update.

Well, the option for meshing resolution (raster size), aswell as the option for “fast” or “high quality” mesh isn´t there anymore on my side (UI in German), only “Optimize” & “Hole filling”:

Uninstalling 6.3.0.971 and reinstalling 6.2.3.875 brings back the options for “fast” & “high quality” meshing aswell as the selectable raster size:

Also new projects show this “rough” texture and partial holes where enough data exists. Something has definitely changed in the algorithm…

Thank you! I´ll make sure to keep the scans, in case they need it for further inspection.

For good measures i did one more scan on the same object, same position, same lighting.

Each time i made sure to perform a full calibration and tried to gather around 15k frames per scan using both multi-line and single-line laser.

I was about to start a thread on this same issue I noticed with laser scans after upgrading.

Working with an OLD fused dataset, so not a calibration issue.
If I click on the old fused data, and go to meshing. The option to select mesh quality is gone, now there’s just an option to optimize or close holes:

And If I leave optimize turned off, it’s still producing way less dense polygon counts than before.

Here is a 6.3.0 mesh with no optimization and no hole filling, note how much more faceting is visible on this version vs the one below.

And a 6.2.3 mesh

I will say the optimization smoothing is nice if you’re in a hurry and want to skip manual surface clean up in zbrush, it smooths out the surface and leaves pretty crisp edges. But wouldn’t it make more sense for this new optimization options to be under the “smoothing” tab than the “meshing” tab?

Thank you for bringing up this topic - the decrease in mesh quality was so noticeable for me that I started using Cloud Compare for meshing the fused point cloud. It’s a bit of a learning curve, but the resultant mesh is of better quality and is watertight without the need for a ‘fill holes’ step.

For what it’s worth, many of us would like more processing options, not fewer. If there is a dire need to remove choice or complexity from the application, then perhaps there should be a toggle to select ‘basic’ mode or ‘advanced’ mode to either hide or show more granular controls.

I can relate to what you’re describing because I’ve been observing a very similar issue ever since I purchased the Metro X.

When I first received the scanner, I was genuinely impressed. The mesh quality and fine detail reproduction were outstanding. I spent a considerable amount of time developing an optimized workflow, saving my scan parameters, and achieving highly consistent results.

Everything changed after updating Revo Scan from version 5.7 to 5.8. The degradation in mesh quality was immediately noticeable. Fine details that had previously been captured accurately became significantly less defined, even though I was using the exact same hardware, objects, lighting conditions, and scanning parameters.

I contacted technical support and requested version 5.7. It took some effort to convince them because I believed I had lost my original installation file. Eventually, they provided me with a copy of version 5.7. However, even that version did not perform exactly like the original installation I had been using.

A few weeks later, I unexpectedly found my original 5.7 installer on a USB drive. I installed it, replacing the version sent by technical support, and the difference was remarkable. The mesh quality immediately returned to the level I had experienced when I first purchased the scanner. This strongly suggested that there was some difference between the original installer and the one I received later, despite both being labeled as version 5.7.

I reported these findings to technical support, but they told me such a difference was impossible. I asked for a technical explanation, but unfortunately I never received one.

Then, about two months later, Revopoint introduced the Metro Y.

This sequence of events naturally raises questions. Is the reduction in quality an unintended consequence of software development? Are updates being released before they have been thoroughly validated across different workflows? Or is there another technical explanation that customers simply haven’t been given?

I’m not interested in promoting conspiracy theories or making accusations without evidence. However, from an engineering perspective, it is difficult to ignore a pattern where an older product appears to lose performance shortly before a newer model is released. Correlation does not prove causation, but it certainly deserves a transparent explanation.

As users, we invest not only in the hardware but also in the software ecosystem. We expect software updates to preserve—or improve—the performance of the products we have already purchased, not reduce it. Greater transparency from Revopoint regarding software changes would go a long way toward maintaining user confidence.

It is not , because I am testing also the software and I can’t be fooled by anything , I can see the accuracy before I start scanning just looking at the preview window.

There are some issues sometimes that do not make the to fix issues in the releases but for sure nobody downgrading anything because both team are not even related to each other , different offices different people , but sometimes the Dev. Team trying out new things with the algorithms and unfortunately they choice the less desired one for the release , it is different when you are developer and different when you actually see the results as a user.

So no, there is no conspiracy that the Dev. Team or anybody on the team downgrading anything as that are not the values and goals of the CEOs .

I just installed 6.3.1 and the settings for high quality is back, i was able to mesh at a high resolution again:

The mesh looks exactly like my 6.2.3 mesh now at 0.11mm grid size.

Yes, the quality seems to have returned and I am pleased to see the extended options again. Please keep us informed regarding the spacemouse support, as this will be truly helpful during point cloud and mesh cleanup.
