Request: make Windows software run without Admin permission

It seems as though Handy Scan for Windows needs Administrator permissions to run at all. This means that I can’t use it at work without having to call someone from out IT department to type in their password every time. Therefore it’s useless for me at work unless I bring in my own laptop from home. I don’t think I’m alone in this. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks!

Hi @jwhildeb

Thank you for this suggestion.

I will record it and discuss with our developers. But one problem is that we may meed legal issue if we don’t request the permission before you use the software. (I’m not sure, will confirm it)

I’ve posted about this issue three months ago. Two releases later, and no effort to fix this yet.

Only reason for admin access is if you are accessing restricted resources. Standard users would never use admin. It is too dangerous to the security of the computer.

Admin is needed during install only as you are copying files into a restricted folder. After that, this application should NEVER need those elevated privileges.

At the software companies I’ve worked for, this would be considered a release criteria defect. Product would never be shipped while this defect still exists. If product was released with this defect, a fixed version without the defect would be absolute highest priority. You would pull the release with this defect out of distribution immediately and replace it with the fixed version within two weeks.

We wouldn’t even send a Beta to a user with a defect like this.

Hi @banonay

Sorry, I didn’t notice your suggestion before. I think it is important. So I will discuss with product team about this case again.

Are you a software engineer? We are holding the “Suggest & Win” contest, if you have interest, sincerely invite you to join it, and you can share all your suggestions about the software there. Here is the link: Share your suggestions about Handy Scan & Win A Prize!

Yes, I am a software engineer. I’ve been working in software development for about 30 years now.

I saw the contest and have added this to the list. When I think of some more, I’ll be back to put them on the list.

Has this been addressed yet? I want to use my scanner at work, but I don’t want to bother my IT department if the software needs permissions they can’t grant.

Not yet on version 3.0.6.

Hi @jwhildeb @banonay ,

As I know, our developer team are working on this issue. We will let you know once the problem is solved.
