Question about merging from a new user

Hello,
I received my metroX this week, it’s my first 3D scanner, I’ve started testing it for a project to reproduce a fiber part, the part is quite large, about 42cm by 32cm. I’ve done two scans, one of the upper surface and one of the inner surface, but when I try to merge them, the software gives me an error saying that the overlap area is less than 10%. I’ve tried to find out for myself but I can’t really find any answers, so I’ve come to ask for your help. Because I’d like to be able to 3D print this part, but if I scan only one side it considers it to be “empty” and I’m obliged to repair it, which leads to the creation of a volume on the inside that doesn’t correspond to my part.

In order to merge the scans there needs to be enough geometry that is the same in both scans to merge. Because you scanned the upper surface and the inner surface, even though they look similar because the part itself is thin, there really isn’t any geometry that overlaps. Try making a third scan where you put the part on its side and scan so that the scan data wraps around from the upper to the lower surface in the same scan, even if it is only a portion of the part you are scanning. Then you should be able to merge the upper scan with this third scan and it will have enough overlapping geometry to merge. Then you can do the same by merging your initial inner surface scan to the merged upper+wraparound scan. In the future try to get enough data in both scans that is common between the scans.

hi, and thanks for this answer, i understand what you say, i’m going to try and follow up, thanks !

stand it up at an angle that was not used before and scan it again making sure to capture some portions that were used in the other scans, use that scan to align the other two
