Best practices for merging multiple scans?

Hi all! I was looking for the best way to merge scans for the best output. In other scanning software I have used, I was able to select as many scans as I wanted, and then merge/align them all in one workflow (align then select next pointcloud, align, select, etc)…then once I exited the align tool, all the scans were aligned.

In the Revo Metro software it seems I can only manually align two scans at a time. Then once I exit, I suddenly have a “third” scan that is the alignment of the previously selected two scans. So now I have three scans. No biggie, that third scan is fine. But, what if I have many scans to align? Let’s say I scanned an object with four separate scans and the feature align does not work and I need to use manual alignment:

S1
S2
S3
S4

I align S1 and S2 which then produces a merged scan: M1-2

I now have:

M1-2
S1
S2
S3
S4

Do I now take S3 and manually merge it with M1-2? If I do that, I now have:

M1-2-3
M1-2
S1
S2
S3
S4

…am I understanding that correctly? If I need to manually merge scans I need to go back in and keep selecting the latest merge result, and essentially forever disregard the “input” scans, only dealing with the latest merge result?

That’s correct , any other software do so exact the same , create a new merged scan that can be used to merge other scans to replace the missing angles until it is complete .

Since you already use merged 2 scans , it have a greater amount of points and provide better base for merge

Just please clean the merged scan result from overlapped points or lose points so the next merge is clean and easy to merge .

Thanks! Well, that is not quite true  Other software like Artec Studio (which I mentioned I used in another thread) is just fine and happy aligning all scans manually in one operation, then running fusion on all scans all at once. I just am debating whether I want to stay with that expensive software or move to something less costly/free.

Good tip on using the clean function before moving to the next scan, I will try that, thank you.

That is not what I meant, you got my answer the wrong way .

What I mean is that the original scans are not merged and removed , you need original scans for the record.

Merged scans are a new scans generated from the original , and manual option only allows 2 of them , Feature option 9

We are in Revo Metro so this require own workflow that you need to follow , forget about Artec for a moment

For the money, I would completely forget about Artec. I pay a lot of money for some of the software I use, far more than what you are paying for Artec, but only because it is the only way to do it the other options are more expensive, but paying that for something that can be done for free with a little extra effort. I would definitely be doing my homework on how much your time is worth there to see if it is worth the cost. Maybe it is for you, but for me, it wouldn’t be
