Multiple scan merging

When taking multiple scans, is it better for example to do one click and merge all the scans and then re process for better detail, I’m guessing this will use less processing until its actually required. I process most of my scans at .02 - .05 depending on scanner etc as its the details that I’m after but on large items / statues for example its a massive file.

any advice welcome

Rob

Unfortunately the scan alignment in a merge is only relevant for that specific merge. The individual scans retain no data on that transform. Even the result of “Preview the Alignment” is a one-shot deal as pressing “Generate Model” will trigger re-alignment (which can be a lovely surprise when you have a nice preview, edit part of a scan, then try to finalize it only to have the alignment go crazy because of your edit).

Even though during a single session it appears that the scans stay in alignment they will revert when Revoscan is closed. Fusing for better detail will also change the orientation. The ability to “lock” an alignment is one of the most requested features.

Theoretically scans sharing a global marker file will stay together, but I’ve both seen it work and not work.

Thanks, ive a few scanners but im using the metro X for the bigger projects and only using feature mode, ive yet to get it to work with markers despite having the whole kit etc. i hear some people cannot get the feature to work but in my case it does and fortunately its what i need on the most part.

Ill do a test run but can see me doing a contiuous full scan and taking a week to process

One clarification on what I wrote above: fusing at different levels should give you the same orientation each time. So you could use Cloud Compare to align the “draft” versions and the transformation matrix for the pieces should be relevant for the higher quality version of the same scan.

makes sense that, ill give it a try :+1:

I would agree :100: with @TheBoatScans

If the file are massive and you want to keep the resolution the answer will be only Cloud Compare , not only for merging but for proper registration and meshing at higher settings compared to what you get in Revo Scan X . So yes the best choice !
