Insufficiaent Ram Message

Hi, I own a Metro X and my laptop specs are well above what’s required

I recently received the trackit for a project scanning some ornaments that have been hand calved.

It sometimes differs but between 7000 & 18000 frames, I get an Insufficient Ram message. Turns out, I click OK and carry on.

I understand that the trackit clearly has more data flowing during scans and my laptop for the trackit is closer to the minimum specs.

I have ordered new Memory but because 16GB is soldered on already, I will only get 48GB Max. I will be building a Mini ITX PC with more up to date components.

Everything is buttery smooth from scanning to meshing in high quality.

My very long winded question, is does the message refer to the Memory Ram or Video Ram? Ive assumed Memory Ram.

Really happy with it so far though !

Processor AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX with Radeon Graphics 3.30 GHz
Installed RAM 32.0 GB (31.4 GB usable)
Storage 954 GB SSD SAMSUNG MZVLB1T0HBLR-00000, 954 GB SSD SAMSUNG MZVLB1T0HBLR-00000
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU (16 GB), AMD Radeon™ Graphics (496 MB)

System ram

Amazing, Thank you !

Hi @BobbyCrook

16GB of RAM is not enough to use MetroX with its full potential , 32GB of RAM is minimum recommended , with 48 GB you may get better stability but be careful fusing and meshing at the maximum settings especially when using Auto mode as it can really use a lot of System RAM .

VRAM is only used while scanning ,when GPU acceleration is set ON, processing use only System RAM .

You can easy determine what fusing settings to use by measuring the smallest detail on your scanned object , for example if the smallest detail is 0.3 mm use it for fusing then under meshing set GRID to 0.3 mm as well . You will save time and system resource .

Sorry to clarify, The laptop has 32GB ram (16 soldiered in and 16gb which I can swap out)

That’s how I get to 48 GB as I can only swap the 16 with a 32 which gives the 48.

The Insufficient Ram is happening while scanning only on the trackit

Processing, meshing merging all happens without issue on the trackit.and Metro X

I haven’t had this problem with the Metro X but I assume because its transmitting less data? I used the same model with the Metro X and the Trackit .

Its no problem, I was just curious and working around it for now

That’s new , because usually the projects are not as big before processing and you should be ok with 32GB

Ok ..Your graphic card use 16GB of VRAM and it needs 16GB of RAM to run proper, then you are left with around 8 GB only for use with Trackit while scanning/ project saving , that may be the issue .

You can try to see if this is the problem by switching to CPU scanning only and switch off GPU acceleration .

If you don’t see the message about RAM then you are sure about the issue , so updating the system RAM will be the best choice .

If you still see the RAM message issue while using only CPU while scanning then something else is on the hand here .

Trackit uses double amount of data vs MetroX in real time scanning. And more when using GPU acceleration.

Very much appreciate your help!

I switched off GPU Acceleration and it lasted longer but same thing. I then switched to CPU only, but it wasn’t really liking that!

I Know the card has 16gb of VRAM, but didn’t realise it uses 16GB of system RAM! that would indeed be an issue.

I have some more RAM coming tomorrow which will push me up to 48GB and I will give it another test tomorrow evening.

I do have a custom PC on the horizon and will make sure to max that out with the best I can get my hands on

A proper system should always have double the System RAM as your graphic card for full performance .

But you said that after switching to CPU , you got the same message , that should be not the case .

You may check the Task Manager and see what consuming the RAM .

Sometimes if your SSD is too slow the system can overload the RAM while in live scanning . There is lots of things that could affect it . I used once a portable USB HD for my projects and that was not working well as the system got bottleneck while live scanning.

I think your laptop is fixable after you find out about the source of this issue .

You may make appointment with Revopoint’s technical assistant to try solve it as well , but before that try with the new RAM and see if things got fixed or not before the next step.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear, when I switched to the CPU it was very laggy and the CPU was running at 100% so I just stopped as it would have taken forever

I will let you know once the new RAM is installed and thanks again !

Ok no problem, waiting for your update !

Installed the extra RAM today and it solved my problem. The project I am currently doing now means I scan the whole model then the base without any messages.

For anyone else reading this and you end up needing as much RAM as possible, Closing RevoScan clears GBs out of the RAM too!

Thanks for the help

Hi Bob , thank you for the update , glad to hear that it was the only issue .

Yes when you save and close the software and reopen your project again it can release usually even 5 GB or more of bottlenecked RAM , this still need to be fixed because even with 64GB of RAM I still have to do it sometimes when scanning more objects than one in the same project .

You more than welcome !
