CPU spikes when in laser modes on MetroX even before scanning process

Is it normal for the CPU usage and temps to spike just by switching to one of the laser modes. That’s prior to even starting a scan. Switching back to full field mode and the CPU spike and temperature drop immediately. I have tried turning on and off both GPU Acceleration and Enable GPU accelerated rendering with no changes in CPU usage and temps.

OS: Windows 11 Pro
CPU: 19-14900KS
RAM: 64GB @ 6000
GPU: 4080 Super
Revo Scan 5.6.4 MetroX

Hi @Jeffrey

Full Field mode do not use GPU acceleration.
It is only used with scanning using Laser mode and nothing else, once you finish scan and click complete , it full switching to CPU processing .

GPU accelerated rendering is used just for rendering the preview of the screen .
All data need to be send to GPU and back , that why you see CPU spikes .

It also use CPU to write down all data to your hard drive .

GPU is used mainly just to capture frames in real time , CPU to write it down . Hybrid combination.

Most important question here is what is your Frame rate using GPU acceleration vs CPU and laser mode.

CPU only- Max 47 FPS
GPU acceleration Max 57-60

Yes, I’m getting 60 FPS when in laser mode.
I just thought it was abnormal that the CPU and temperature spikes and stays at 80°-90° C only just by switching to either of the laser modes prior to starting a scan. It would make more sense to me if that would spike during actual laser scanning where all the data was being processed by the CPU and written to the hard drive.

Thank you

Hello @Jeffrey

I totally understand, in my workstation with RTX 3090 ti, the CPU jump to 80% when switching to laser mode , but on my new laptop with RTX 4060 only to 12% .

So different behavior on different systems, and I do totally agree with you. It is good you monitor the behavior because I always do as well.

New updated and improved version is on the way.

I will leave a note about your experience to the dev.team

Thanks !

Thank you!

Looking forward to the update and getting the TrackIt when it releases.

As a follow up, I received my TrackIt and I am blown away how well it works. I was fully expecting it to spike my CPU similar to how the MetroX does when in laser mode. To my surprise, my CPU doesn’t go above 55 C. I can switch over to Revo Scan 5.6.9 MextroX and have it send my CPU 80+ C even when not actively scanning. Might be worth comparing how each program processes the data.

The TrackIt is on another level of simplicity, speed, and quality. Scanned a large variety of items from tools, cases, and golf clubs where they all turned out fantastic. The lighting was poor when I tried the textures feature and it was better than I expected.

Great job to all involved.

Update:

Use the newly released Metro software that is for the MetroX, MetroY, and MetroY Pro instead of the software specific for just the MetroX. The way it manages the CPU while scanning and idle is completely different. The CPU doesn’t spike while not scanning and doesn’t go as high during laser scans.

Major improvement.

I would also suggest to not open any other window/software while processing as it will stop processing and will slow down the CPU usage .

My CPU getting maximum 60% utilization at 5.8Ghz while processing ( fusing, meshing, texturing )

I never even noticed that there is Metro software for the Y inspire 2 and metro x and additional, there is just the Metro x software.

Ive had issues with silent crashes with the dedicated metro X software.

What is the difference between this and the software for Inspire 2, y and X combined software?

Revo Metro is for MetroX, MetroY, MetroY Pro & Inspire 2 , it is a new software to rule them all that uses laser scanning and works great so far. It is the first public version so all new features will be added to it in common weeks

Revo MetroX will retire soon and archived .

Thanks for taking the time to respond. So I was having issues with the normal Metro X Standalone one and support were looking into it (Silent Crashes) Is the combined one any different?

I did look on the website but was just curious. I will download the combined one and see if that works OK and thanks for letting me know !

Hi @BobbyCrook

According to my knowledge the Revo Metro have fixed the issue with the crashing as not only you experienced it in the latest version of Revo Scan MetroX , if you still have crashing issues I would suggest to go to the Revo Scan MetriX download page , scroll to the bottom and get one early version of Revo Scan MetroX where the silent crashing bug was actually fixed as well , but somehow passed to the latest public version .

I hope that makes sense

OK, Cool, so I will try Revo Metro instead and see how that goes. To stop the crashing, I need to roll back RevoScan Metro X back to the point where the laser scanning is slower, so don’t really want to do that.

Appreciate the help though and I will try the Revo Metro instead
