Calibration setting stored in scanner or software?

After experiencing some drift on my pop 2 I have decided to do the calibration in the latest revo software. I couldn’t get through the testing at my shop on the desktop so decided not to do it but I needed to scan some things at home and figured I would try it again at the counter where I am nice and comfortable to go through the motions. I had the scanner hooked to my laptop and successfully completed the calibration and chose to update the setting. My question is, is the new calibration stored on my laptop within the software or is it updated in the scanner body itself so when I go to use it at the shop on the desktop it will retain this new calibration? If it is stored in the scanner body, is there any problem with it sitting for long periods of time and still retaining this new setting or is there something like a small internal battery that will help it keep it’s memory?

The. Calibration session itself is stored on your computer where you calibrated your device , however after your successfully recalibrated your device an update is saved on on your device reflecting the new parameters.

So no matter what you use after , computer or a phone , your device calibration is up to date .

What can affect the calibration over time ?
shaking , bumping by accident on something or fall to the floor.

The device is a small computer like your phone that still works after you removed the battery . You don’t have to worry about it .

Check the calibration status every 3 months and don’t get obsessed too much with it .

The best way to check your calibration level is to use marker mode , if the scanner have issues recognizing markers in marker mode it needs recalibration .

If your objects drifting while scanning it has to do with lacking of features and not Calibration issues .

Very heavy sandy surface can also indicate the need for calibration , however pay attention that some reflective surfaces or too great distance can induce noises as well.

Thanks for the detailed response. The objects I was getting drift on shouldn’t have really had the issue and I approached them multiple ways. Ultimately the range came out and I got the scans as needed. The first object was ultimately done in many smaller scans merged and still the drift the same and the second object was flat on my large turntable with scanner stationary and revealed a vertical drift (distance from scanner) that shouldn’t have been there. Ultimately the first scans had that same distance drift also. I will redo these in the not so distant future and see how it goes. Thanks for the help.

Yeah the issues with drifting scanning flatter surface is an issue with most scanners on the market , I would suggest to use the marker mode or global Marker mode for better metrology in this case .

Also pay attention of the distance between scans as too big shift of distances can alter the accuracy resulting in less matching results .

I think Global Marker mode is the best option here as it do not care about the scanned features and keep the metrology based on just the positions of the markers so always accurate with multiple scans .

And you more than welcome ! Anytime !

I just got back into doing some scanning after a couple years from it and have been hesitant to deal with markers yet but I can definitely see that to be the way to go. I did a scan also of a clear 20 quart square bin that I first placed little gobs of modeling clay to make features all over and then sprayed and that did real well with both the range and pop2 showing same results. I should have had issues with that one based on the flat surfaces but the features were there. I am finding that even though I may get good tracking on a whole object it doesn’t mean the scan will be good. One really needs to think about how the scanner sees things and how it needs to reference off what is next to it to give it accuracy. I learned a lot over a few days recently which was nice. It actually is mind blowing how these things can capture all around an object and have such accuracy. Doesn’t seem possible even.

That’s the crucial knowledge, without it it is hard to understand how your toll is working and how to use it best .
Just following tutorial will not make everything perfect .
Good experience and understanding of the process is the key !

Yes it is mind blowing where we reached in the last years … using just simple phone to get all the data …
