After a steep learning curve I find it amazing for what I need it for (scanning difficult flat curvy objects). Yes, I have to place lots of features around the objects that I am scanning, but that was expected and not a problem to do.
I found it works best for me doing short quick(ish) scans with my smartphone via wifi and then stitching them together using revoscan 5 on my desktop.
I have got some really good scans that exceeded my expectations.
My only problem is finding a free or free to try software that can do a good surface curvature analysis for convex/concave and surface imperfections (dents etc)
So far I have tried
MeshInspector (free trial, curvature tool wont seem to show what I need it to show-dents won’t show up etc)
Blender (wont work on my computer)
Meshlab (runs too slow on my computer to get anything done)
Cloudcompare
Meshmixer (I think it doesn’t have this feature?)
Freecad (For some reason I cant get the curvature analysis it to show any surface features)
So if anyone knows a free to try app that can do this please let me know.
One thing that I have learnt from going through all these apps (using them for basic stuff is like pulling teeth) is how good and easy the revopoint scanning software is, I literally didn’t actually have to read any instructions for scanning/editing and merging scans it all just seemed to be intuitive.
I kind of have it working, but just one thing I hope that you might be able to help me with.
I opened my mesh in fusion 360, click inspect for all the inspection tools.
The problem that I am running into is that some of the tools let me select the mesh body and the inspect analysis will work fine, but some of the other inspect tools won’t let me select the mesh body and thus the inspection tool won’t work.
For instance Zebra analysis will let me click and select the mesh to inspect with that tool, also Draft Analysis will let me do that as well.
Draft Analysis is somewhat useful to a certain extent, but what I think I really need is the Curvature Map Analysis to work. When I select that tool it won’t let me click on and select the mesh, so I can’t get that tool working.
Any ideas of what I’m doing wrong?
I did a Google search but couldn’t find an answer, but maybe its something really simple that I’m missing.
Seems like what I am doing wrong is trying to do the curvature map in fusion 360 on a mesh a not a surface.
Seems like from what I have read giving a mesh a surface is not very straightforward, I transformed the mesh in fusion 360 to t-splines (whatever t-splines is!!!??) and it turned the scanned object black, something worked because I was then able to select the object with curvature map inspection, but unfortunately i can’t see the map analysis because no matter how I adjust the settings and sliders in the curvature map toolthe object just stays a black color.
Sorry , I didn’t have to use that function in fusion360 yet, just knew about it. Therefore I don’t know where its possibilities are and how to use it properly. I would advise you to search the internet and youtube about it for better understanding of how to use it properly.
After a lot of research found out why the analysis software wouldn’t work, as far as I understand it was because the.stl mesh wasn’t solid. After I made it solid I got the software working ok, although unfortunately the analysis software for my usage ended up being somewhat underwhelming.
However, I managed to find some work-arounds with some other techniques to do the analysis required and managed to see what I needed to see.
