Good morning everyone,
owner of a pop2 since was released on kickstarter, but never had the chances to use it heavily with my work.
when I tried I always gave up because I couldn’t manage it, no matter how hard I tried…I couldn’t get the results.
This time I wanted to scan my Jet Helmet, I have something in mind I want to develop.
I sprayed the vanishing spray so as to remove the shiny surfaces, I added the marker points on my helmet but:
-in feauture mode it lose track easily, being a symmetrycal surface.
-in marker mode it doesn’t get the markers and I can see only a red surface everywhere everytime.
could anyone help me out with this object? to find the right way to make the scan
Not going to have enough features for feature mode. Which is good you switched to marker mode. You may need a few more dots on there. Revopoint likes lots of dots. Did you dot and then spray? if so you may have covered your dots and they are not reflecting properly.
thank you for your reply.
Yes, I did spray them after I sticked them all, otherwise they wouldn’t have sticked on the surface.
but I cleaned them with a wet cloth before to try the scanning.
I’ll try to add more dots so, fingers crossed it’ll work
Hi @enzo_87 you need more markers , I will tag in @Scan2Model Mike recently scanned beautifully helmet , not with Pop series but he may have for you some better tips.
That looks like enough markers to me now. It still looks pretty glossy though, that could be your issue. I say that just because I see the light reflecting off of it in the colored camera.
Just out of curiosity I hooked up my pop2 and took my daughters bicycle helmet and set it up just as you did with some spray. This is what my screen grab looks like while scanning. Yours isn’t showing any marker dots either. When I remove the markers and scan it then goes red which is telling me that it isn’t seeing any markers. I am guessing your markers are not clean enough of spray and the scanner isn’t recognizing them. They need to be reflective and the pop2 is very sensitive to this type of thing as well as surfaces being uniform. Try cleaning them better after spray maybe. Attached are 2 different screen grabs. First all is well and second same settings but with dots removed.
It should works without issues , if you have problem with the markers being not recognized , please recalibrate the scanner , it will fix the issues .
If after calibration your scanner still not recognizing markers make sure the markers are reflective and not simple paper markers as they do not works anymore with the new software .
thank you for the effort put to try helping me.
I just ordered some new dots and I’ll try again without spray them at all.
Maybe I’ll be more lucky this time.
I’m gonna try, in the meantime, with some clay for children, I’ll try to add some irregularities here and there and maybe with the feauture mode I’ll be able to scan it.
Because I’m going to trace the helmet in plasticity, they shouldn’t be a problem for the shape.

Thans for the moment, I’ll keep you posted as soon as the dots arrive and I try again.
I’m not 100% sure but…I think I always had issues when I tried with markers.
but I could be wrong, didn’t use very often.
I’m gonna try again with the new markers as soon as they arrive.
worst scenario, I’m gonna try to recalibrate the scanner.
in your experience, is it something that a not advance user can do without breaking anything?
apologies for asking,
I’m looking for revo calibration software, but seems difficult to find.
checked few links all of them with error 404, download page on revopoint website doesn’t have it.
has it been replaced with some other software by chance?
L
EDIT: found through revo scan.
now I’ll wait for the markers to arrive
Definitely try a recalibration. You can’t hurt it by doing so. It can be tricky to get through the calibration tests so one needs patience. Last time I calibrated my pop2 I was unable to pass the tests with the plate on a low table, later in the day I tried again on a tall countertop and passed them right away. Body position can help one be more precise trying to get through them but it may solve the marker issue. Markers will most likely be more accurate then features like clay or crumpled paper. My best scans have always been with markers where as with features like crumpled paper or clay globs all over I would tend to get some drift or accumulated error that would lead to a scan mismatch for merges or even an overlap on a 360 degree rotation around an object.
in theory I did the calibration at the first attempt…lucky me.
now I have just to wait for the markers and see if it works.
the ones provided with the scanner, though, didn’t look that reflective but actually look matte to me
If the markers are not detected that is the first indicator that the scanner need calibration since it relay on the calibration between the Depth sensors and the RGB camera .
Paper markets was used in the begining with the old software but was replaced with the better reflective one to provide better tracking and detection on the curves , you need minimal 3 markers to be always in the view of the frame in an unique pattern.
Sorry for my slow reply, I just tried scanning a helmet with my MIRACO in marker mode and it worked well. You definately need plenty of marker stickers.
I also used Transparent Vanishing Dulling spray on the lower carbon fibre panel.
