I recently scanned in a part using Metro Y Pro using Cross laser lines. I selected a .5mm target point distance. After scanning, I reviewed the scans and am quite pleased with how they look at this initial un-Fused stage. What I need some guidance on is how to proceed with Fusion.
.Should the Fusion point distance equal the target point distance? In this case, should I select Fusion at .5mm so it matches the target point distance? Or is this another way of being able to control the resulting surface quality? In other words, choosing a smaller Fusion point distance will give a more detailed model, regardless of what target point distance was used while scanning?
The software suggested Fusion at .16mm. Is that the best way to proceed? If so, it would be helpful to understand why the .16mm Fusion suggestion was given.
Suggested point distance is calculated according to point cloud quality/density of your scan aka point distance and is (or at least should be) the value to fuse at for the best representation. In Laser mode, the more you scan, the greater the density gets and tjr lower values is proposed/possible.
But, you can go with higher setting (like 0.30mm instead of proposed 0.16mm) , if you don’t need all the details of the point cloud, but not with lower setting, as it would introduce artifacts. For detailed objects I prefere the proposed settings. For like mechanical parts with less details and bigger, smooth surface areas I go with something like 0.3, as it gives smoother looking surfaces, and takes less time to fuse!
The preset point distance is for the software to know what goal/point density you want to achieve so it can give you visual feedback (color blue),if you scanned the object enough so you can fuse it at least at that point distance, when fusing.
The Fusing suggestions are based on the total v scanned volume including the noise data so not exactly just the scanned object , ignore it when using Laser mode .
Fuse your object based on the details of your object , measure the smallest part and adjust the fusion resolution accordingly, if the smallest part is 0.1 mm fuse at that point distance , then when you mesh it use that setting for your Meshing Guide to exactly correspond with the point distance , meshing at higher resolution than the point distance will induce artificial points and you may lose details .
