Merging scans causes loss in fidelity

Other users have reported the same thing.. Revo Scan 5 Quality loss when merging different scans

Thought I was going crazy. I scanned this PCB in 2 parts, merged them and noticed that there’s a significant drop in fidelity. In my case it removed around 300,000 points from the cloud in total. quite frustrating because I was happy with how the scan turned out before merging. Is there a reason this is happening?? First photo is single scan, second is the merged scan. I’m on M1 Mac, Metro Y pro, Revo-Metro latest software.

Hi @sorrynotcyborg

Do you know that when scanning 2000 frames , 80% if it is removed in process because it is not really needed ? The software will not keep all the points that are unnecessary , it removing overlapping points and double points .

The scan you think was super clean before merge was not really super clean at all , once it overlapped with another scan , the software cleaned it throughout and rebuild the surface .

Always select your first best scan with the best accuracy as #1 in the merging tab to keep the best accuracy since not all fragments you scan reflect exact tur same accuracy .

I was thinking the same at first as you do , but then I cleaned the scan more professionally and the results was the same after it get rid of the unused points .

Get yourself a Cloud Compare, and clean and merge the scans there after fusing in Revo software , you will see what is happening more clearly in this workflow and why .
