Intel i7 11th Gen with RTX3070 vs i9 13th Gen with RTX5060

I’ve had an HP Omen gaming laptop with an 11th generation Intel i7 processor that I recently upgraded to 64GB. I bought a Metro Y Ultra after conversing with Revoscan support. They said it would work OK, but would be better with a faster processor. So I decided to look for a newer laptop. I found - and bought - an Acer Nitro 15 with a 13th generation i9 13900H 2600MHz processor. When I looked at the specs, I saw it had an RTX5060. I’m pretty tech savvy, but don’t know the ins and outs of Nvidia’s lineup, so I did the noob thing and said to myself “the 5060 must be better than the 3070 because of the numbering”, but am now reading that isn’t necessarily true. Also, the Acer maxes out at 32GB of DDR4 ram (the HP also has DDR4 ram, but 64gb of it). I did try 1 scan with the HP but it was my first 3D scan ever so the fact that it was underwhelming is likely more a factor of me having no idea what I’m doing. But, I still have time to return this newer computer. I did run a graphics benchmark and the new laptop did score higher than the older HP with the 3070 card in it. Interested in realworld advice if possible. Thanks!

P.S. I also have supported the Pop 4 via Kickstarter. I’m going to be scanning parts for a race boat. The largest will probably be 15"x15" with limited complexity for creating brackets or making the parts via 3D printing. I’m a hobbyist and primarily use Shapr3D but also have Fusion (free edition). Hopefully that gives you some additional background info.

I would not get less than 64GB of ram for scan use. You will exceed it. I have 64GB and can bump up on this if I’m doing something big. If I were buying a new machine, 128GB would be what I’d do.

Hi @Scaryfast94

The graphic cards has limitation how fast they can go so if it is 4060 or 5060 it really don’t matter in Revo Metro but what matter is your RAM , I scanned a lot with POP 4 lately and some projects go even to 57 GB of RAM while processing on best settings .

I would never use a 32 GB of RAM as you can run very fast out of it and crash instantly so not really recommended for MetroY Ultra either.

I’m processing a scan of a pistol. Fusing it and running out of the 64GB of RAM I have. I had planned to post edit it and PUTV said to process it on high. I may need to sell this laptop and get one with 128GB.

Hi Robin , I was able to produce 150 milion polygons what took around 57 GB or RAM

What about cache ? You should not crash with 64GB of RAM .

For export I never create bigger than 30-50 milion polygons because other software usually don’t support bigger models plus you need a room for editing .

I don’t think your pistol would take more , if you like to send me the project without Fuse/Mesh to putvmail@gmail.com you are more than welcome !

it did not crash, but it used it all. I fused at the minimum. Even on new beastie is was slow. Probably won’t do it again.

A friend suggested I design what I want to remove and then do a boolian in Bambu Studios. This sounds like an easier solution. I think I’ll try that next. Meanwhile, I needed to get this one out and just took a dremel to the window after it was printed.

I just have 32GB of RAM.. sadly.

But a good CPU (Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX) and a RTX5070

Am I really lacking power for the POP4?

Would rather buy the POP4 than 64GB of ram to be honest!

Hi @Fresh

32 GB fir the whole system not just for the software, however you may expect some crashes if you going to process scans on a very high settings , nothing to do with POP 4 , it has to do with the software and processing .
I see a lot of people complaining about crashes but the problem is in their system .

32GB will allow you to scan without any issues , but fusing and texturing can be challenging sometimes with 32 GB of RAM

The team is currently working on the software and adjusting the processing of lower RAM usage so it may be already great when you get it .

So would I be better with my 11th Gen I7 processor laptop with RTX 3070 and 64GB of Ram than my 13th Gen I9 RTX4060/32GB setup?

Not really , the 11th Gen i7 is too slow , but you can scan using your better system and if you encounter issues with processing you can still process it in your slower setup with more RAM, it does don’t means you have to do it all the time , it will depends on what you are processing and at what level .
Hybrid, VCSEL and Laser mode can still works fine with your 32 GB of RAM , but Full Field settings at 0.05 mm and bigger objects may require more RAM for processing , you going to find it on yourself when the time comes .

Can you put more RAM in the i9?

If yes, do that.
