I have recently got the metroy pro and have tried to scan a few things. I currently only have a Dell Latitude 9430 and it doesn’t seem to be holding up to what I need. I will be scanning automotive things and will be move from place to place. I would want my PC to be easily transportable.
I believe my plan now is to build a pc, but I’m unsure of what to get. I’m pretty new to all of this so any advice would be great for CPUs, GPUs, RAM, etc. I’m planning on going to Micro Center and purchasing these items. I would like to stay under the $2000 mark. How many cores do I need on CPU? Can I get away with 32GB of RAM? Amd or Intel?
Currently they recommend a RTX 5060, ryzen 9 9900x, and 2 x 16 GB.
All advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
GPUs I have tested: the 5070 mobile, 5060 mobile, and 3080 desktop all max out the Framerate 57ish FPS.
CPUs I have tested: ryzen 9 9900x desktop, and Intel core ultra 275hx were both plenty fast in my testing.
For Ram: my laptop has 32gb and basically it’s enough until it isn’t. I mostly scan small stuff and it’s been fine, but if I accidentally scan part of my carpet it crashes pretty quickly. I would recommend 64gb if you are trying to make money with the scanner or if it’s your job. My desktop has 64gb and that’s been enough for anything so far.
I’m using a Lenovo Legion 7i with a 5070 and 32gb ram. I got it on sale for $2200 CAD and the ram is upgrable on my model, but I have to wait until ram prices come down.
I would definitely not do 32GB of RAM. 64GB at a minimum, but you can stuff up to 256GB in a desktop today. If I were building a desktop workstation, that’s what I’d do. 128GB for a laptop is about all you can get.
I stick with Intel processors and would get the fastest they make which is the Core Ultra 9 285K, or in a laptop: Core Ultra 9 285HX
GPU, I’m a fan of Quadros because I use the machine for CAD, Reverse Engineering, Video Editing and the like. Blackwell 5000. If you are just gaming and scanning, the RTX 50x0 will be fine, at least a 5070 tho.
SSD, a m.2 Samsung 9100 Pro. This is a gen5 pci unit and is very fast. Get as big as you can afford - up to 4TB.
This is not possible at the $2k mark so you’ll have to make some compromises. Today’s prices on anything with memory are just ridiculous. I typically don’t compromise and buy the fastest possible because I use them a long time and they trickle down to other needs once I get a new one which occurs about every 3yrs. Buy once, cry once.
You can ‘build’ a spec sheet on pcpartpicker.com and configure and shop at the same time.
