INSPIRE 2 help with scanning faces

I’m using the Inspire 2 and it’s my first ever 3d scanner. I’m trying to scan faces/busts, but i cant seem to scan hair and glasses, plus all faces scans i make have many defects, like hoes and folds in the mesh…

Anyone knows some good learning material I could use?

I’ll say right away that I’ve never had an inspire scanner, but I’ve had a lot of experience scanning people in the past. So, always take off your glasses, you won’t get anything good with them, just add a shortcut in an editor like blender or zbrush. Which touches the mesh and texture of zero. try to start with the face without touching the shoulders, scan it in a circle, then the back of the head and so on, then go down and never return to the face. A person cannot be motionless if he is awake and alive

I see, thanks! I’m having a lot of trouble scanning hair as well, sometimes i manage to get hair when i have other features around (like the hair around the shoulders or face), but the scanner completely loses track when I get to the crown of the head. Have you ever had issues with hair?

About the glasses, do you use some standard glasses models that you add later, did I understand correctly? Would it be possible for you to share them, please?

Thank you!

Hi @Ambrogio

First make sure the person washed his/her face to avoid oily skin , it will do better details if the skin is cleaned , start scanning from the side where is the ear and move toward the face moving slowly around the head and returning back , the best for that would be a turntable then you avoid to over scanning already scanned areas what can create later holes and uneven surfaces .

If the hair is very dark , the hair need to be clean as well as hair oil will absorb too much of the infrared light , if not you need to use slightly a dry hair shampoo or mineral powder to calm down the reflections , it will be tricky , when you scanning back of the head with hair try to move to good distance in please of excellent. There is no one tip for all since each subject require different approach .

After scanning you need to clean up the scans from overlapped points and lose points before processing into mesh .

I can scan full body of 2 meter in 2 min using Range series and MIRACO series

I scanned just head with Inspire series just to show off as I prefer other scanners for this job .

Inspire 2 is still good for scanning heads but the best results are when using a turntable or rotating chair .

You can scan glasses separately using laser mode and Inspire 2 and later use other program to add it like for example free CloudCompare if you don’t use anything else .

Scanning humans with handheld scanners is not easy since living object is constantly moving , so lots of practice is required and good model .
