New MetroY Ultra not Calibrating or Tracking

I just received my MetroY Ultra today from Amazon. There seems to be a problem with it. When I went through calibration, it keeps having an error, “Accuracy Check Failed”, when checking accuracy. I have tried multiple times with the same result. When I proceed through calibration, it can do some of the calibration steps, but eventually it loses tracking until I put the scanner right up to the calibration board for it to start tracking again. When I move it away from the calibration board to the requested height, it loses tracking before it gets there. When I go to start a scanning project scanning on the turntable, it doesn’t track anything and I get these warnings that I need more markers even though there are many on the turntable. Also, I am getting these temperature warnings that the unit is too hot. I am using this unit indoors in an air-conditioned room.

I have tested all the scan modes. The laser modes are unable to track any object and hardly picks up any of the markers on the turntable. In full field mode, it does do better in picking up the markers and can track the included statue/bust, but I get warnings that the scan quality is low (and it is). The distance is good and the scanner crosshair is pointed directly at the center of the turntable as well. This was all done in my office with normal indoor lighting.

I have tried Auto camera parameters and have manually adjusted them to different points with no improvement.

Also, when I did the benchmarking on my CPU/GPU in the app, the result on my GPU was “Excellent”.

Did I get a damaged unit??

There was no damage to the delivery box.

Hi @Ant123

You definitely need to recalibrate it , ok not then you will be able to see proper the markers .

If the rest of calibration failed , this mean you need calibrate and be very patient with it and don’t rush , you need to pass each step .

For first time user it can be overwhelming at once , but that is what you need to learn and practice .

Make sure the calibration and the scanning environment is at the same temperature .

Make sure you have enough environment light while calibrating .

The calibration process is like a game and you need to keep both levels and find the center until it turns green then the scanner will take picture

Good it steady ! Best way is to sit down in a chair and rest your arms on the chair arms and hold the scanner in both hands , keep the calibration plate on your lap or a lower table , it will be less stressful and more stable .

When you can’t see markers it usually indicate the scanner need proper calibration and there is nothing else that you can do but go through that process .

Unless you passed the calibration successful and still have issue then you will need to contact customer@revopoint3d.com but not before you passed successful the calibration as there is no other way around .

You will have to calibrate the scanner often , so this is the best moment to learn it first .

Full field don’t need markers to scan , neither Auto mode , only the laser mode needs markers and the calibration need to pass successfully.

If you are new to the scanner and software , use Auto settings for the exposure of the Depth camera settings and don’t set anything manually before you learn how it works .

It will give you an idea about how things react to different color surfaces.

Don’t set exposures to whatever you common sense tells you , you need to know that light objects needs very low exposure settings 1-2 max , and darker objects higher settings sometimes to maximum .

Use Auto mode only with tripod and using dual axis turntable . Scanner should be at 45 degree from the object .
If you don’t use marker set the settings on " Feature"

If you need anything let me know and please follow the manual as well.

Thank you for your response. What about the accuracy check before the calibration? It keeps failing even though I correctly align the crosshairs to the target. I tried this 4 - 5 times. I also had a problem with the calibration steps. I got through many of them successfully, but then the scanner seems to stop working in the later steps and would only work when it was very close to the calibration plate, but this was closer than the distance required for the calibration step. It seemed like the laser light got less bright through the calibration session. Is this normal or is my laser light possibly defective and failing?

I am completely new to using handheld 3D scanners. However, I am a mechanical engineer and have extensive experience working with LiDAR point clouds in my job. I just wanted to provide that context since I’m sure Revopoint has a broad customer base with experts on one end and technology clueless people on the bottom end which I am not one.

If the Calibration check failed you need to manually calibrate it .

I wanted to follow up and clarify that my intention is purely to help you get the best results with your Revopoint scanner. Since you mentioned being new to the hardware and software, I shared those beginner tips to ensure you have a solid foundation, as this specific scanning technology often requires a different approach than other methods.

While your professional experience will be an asset during the scanning phase, mastering this software is essential for success. Even after 30 years in this field, I find there is always something new to learn. My goal is simply to guide you through these initial steps so you can avoid common pitfalls.

Regarding the next steps, please continue to practice the calibration process. I understand it can be frustrating, especially maintaining the steady horizontal and vertical levels required to hit the targets, but it does get easier with practice.

If you find you are still unable to complete the calibration, please contact customer@revopoint3d.com. Their office reopens this Sunday evening ET, and a technician can review your logs to determine if the hardware is functioning as expected.

I am just trying to assist while I have some free time, and I am happy to help you progress to the next level.

Have a great weekend, I am signing off until Sunday evening ET
