Scaning inside the manifold

Hello, so i made reasearch about scaning inside object what i found the only optional way is to put markers on the string and attach them inside and scan using single line mode
Curently im using metro Y Ultra
is there any other option for more effective and more deep scan as i dont want to put the stickers on as it will be hard to peel them off

Hi @Totoshka

Use single line to capture the inside of holes , that’s what it is made for .

You can keep markers outside , it will still penetrate the holes with the laser to a specific depth but not fully of course.

Laser scanning requires markers unless you use Trackit SA or Trackit SE

Yes but the thing that is i need to scan in side manifold maximum as possible wich has a little tricky form, and scanner still requiers trackers if not it will loose the track

Pick up some Transparency printer paper/film from office store like was used for back in the day with overhead projectors. You can still get it. Stick markers on it and cut into strips. Tape inside of manifold with clear scotch tape. One edge of the tape roll back on itself so it is easy to remove. Scanner shoots right through the clear sheets. Make sure they don’t move with wind or movement. I have done this and it works. You can make up many sheets or different shapes to just drape on objects also. Just understand that the marker dots themselves should be flat in shape and not bent. So if the sheets are bending around surfaces, one must be careful with that aspect.

do you have any foto of how it looks, i made today with the strings its kinda worked

I don’t have any pics. If I get some time today or tomorrow I can dig out the scanner and snap some pics of something for you.

Looking at your manifold, you should be able to just have marker blocks around it and capture all the details inside. 3d printed pieces or other objects like lego pieces or something that have markers stuck on them should work.

What are the dimensions of your manifold? Length, width, height , and port hole approximate size?

By the way, just to make sure all are on same page. If one gets scan data around a hole then tracking is good and adding markers inside a hole will not allow the scanner to capture more data. Markers are only for orientation of scanner in space. There is a limit on how deep the different scanners can see in a hole and that is based on the fact that the depth cameras are far apart and converge at a certain distance. What they see is what they get, or what they are told to focus on like a single laser line based on their distance apart is all you will be able to capture. It is good to get parts up in the air some so the scanner can get lower on the part and capture more also.

i cant messure it on Monday, as we installing it on heavly modified car the owner wants to make some test and try some modifications to test the flow of air
About the scaner depth and etc, yes i know about the depth limit the main problem is not depth itself but the tracking loosing itself as when i come with it closer it looses because of lack of markers and similar objects, i thought about buying magnetic 3mm dots, but most of the parts are aluminium or stainles steel wich are not magnetics, and i dont want to stick them as its hard to peel them off and it wont be nice if i dont peel one and it will be sucked in turbo or enguine  in future im going to create some kind of cubik haul where the parts will be attached with strings and markers columns so it can be scaned in 1 go without need to merge 2 scan and move the part, i also have mainifold from porsche turbo S and there wasnt such a problem as the holes are very straight and have slightly bigger diametr, just with some spray it worked perfectly, but with this one for mercedes it gives a little problem, as also the owner brought it only today and on monday i need to give it away to finish some polishing

its 35cm long, height about 11cm, the turbo entrence is in 5.7cm out 8.5cm, the motor entrance is 4.1cm,

Hi @brandocommando7

That is correct , all you need are markers outside or around the opening , best would be magnetic , then use single line mode to get as deep as possible , but there will be limitation how deep it will scan because the depth sensors need to see the laser inside as well

This is a quick (not really quick) example of something like your manifold. This really is a dumpster fire of an object to scan cause of all the details and red and black and gold colors. The cup in the back has a glossy plastic coating on inside which gave problems as well as being white while rest of stuff is dark and needed brightness and exposure cranked up. It gave an ok scan with the last bit at the front I lost tracking and it blew up some other points in space which were easily removed during isolation. Over 35k frames and could have used many more or multiple scans merged. This is just example. If I was to scan this for real I would spray it and lay it on it’s side and do both sides and a merge. The point of this is to show getting the object up so the scanner can be lower to it as well as showing that having some little marker blocks with 45 degree angle markers can go a long ways to capturing the scan. This was absolute bare minimum for markers with metrox scanner and I would definately add more if doing a real scan. Notice in the screen shot the settings I used. Also this was only 6mm markers as I have found that 3mm markers don’t add anything to any scans I have done. Just making sure there are enough markers and at random positions is most important. Also the scanner can go down to about 45 degrees to markers before it loses them, so it is good to have them at different angles or at least with blocks like these that will capture ranges of motion from scanning top down and the side angles. Size of Train Scan: Length of train= 33cm, Height of highest part from table= 19cm, Width= 10cm, Cup size in back= 6cm diameter and 6cm depth, Tube in front diameter outside= 3.6cm and inside is 3.2cm.
MetroX scanner.
6mm markers on 3d printed blocks are at 45 degree angle.
Scan reference setting at 0.20mm.
Fusion at 0.30mm.
15% isolation.
20 iterations of overlap detection.
No manual cleanup.
Fusion at 0.31mm grid size High Quality.
36,559 scanned frames which is extreme and more than I would normally do but this is a detailed object and still I didn’t capture enough in one shot here.
