Ring-shaped artifacts

Hello community!

Why do I have these kind of unwanted ring-shaped artifacts in the raw data? Scanned with revometroy pro, crosslines with turntable and tripod.

Short answer:
The concentric artifacts occur because your stationary scanner and the rotating turntable are not perfectly synchronized. The scanner does not interpret the rotation as a continuous motion, but as a series of slightly shifted individual measurements, which accumulate into circular distortions.

Why do concentric rings appear?

Frame‑to‑frame offset caused by rotation:
The scanner captures many frames per second.
While the object rotates, each frame shows the object in a slightly different position.

  • The scanner expects a static scene
  • The software tries to stitch the frames together
  • The rotation introduces a periodic positional error
    → This produces circular waves / rings in the 3D model.

Rolling‑shutter effect of the camera:
Revopoint scanners use cameras that read the image line by line.

  • During the readout, the object continues to rotate
  • Each line is captured at a slightly different angle
    → This creates radial distortions, which appear as concentric patterns.

When the object rotates, the angle between laser, camera, and surface constantly changes → the software interprets this as geometry changes.

How you can TRY to void or minimize the concentric rings

Reduce rotation speed significantly
Optimal: 0.5–1 RPM
Slower rotation = less positional shift per frame.

BEST WAY TO AVOID THIS:

Move the scanner ! Laser line modes on Revopoint scanners and optimized for hand scanning. This produces the cleanest results.

The object like yours shouldn’t take a lot time anyway.
