Hi, I scanned a sculpted cornerstone, where i had only access to the front. The resulting OBJ file is a surface, that i cannot use in 3D printing, as i would need a volume. Any tips on how to fill the object to make it a printable or editable volume of the complete cornerstone?

Hi Tsutter,
You could use Meshmixer (software free for win or mac)
You can find many online tutorials and many videos on youtube

There are free and low-cost CAD software packages that can open some or all of the PLY, OBJ & STL file formats that can be exported from the Revo Scan and Revo Studio software. Using them, you can add surfaces to make an enclosed (aka ‘watertight’) object that can be 3D printed.

Hi Tsutter,
For my curiosity: Is a medieval representation of cicle of months, September? Where is? France? Belgium?

These responses are vague and generic. I need a specific tutorial for how to add planes on the back of an object to a scan of the front of an object to create a manifold, 3D printable object. Can anyone point me to a tutorial about how to add surfaces to a scan to make a manifold object, please?

Thanks!

Jon

Hi!
You want to make a “solid” body. Here is one such tutorial with principles explained using meshmixer, which maybe you find more useful.please take a look and give me a feedback.

Ivan: great video! Thank you!

Unfortunately, it does not work with my scan, but I understand the principle. My scan is far from flat, so selecting all of the geometry results in no extrusion at all in MeshMixer. If I select just a small relatively flat portion of the scan, the extrusion works, but the surface is pulled down with the extrusion, rather than leaving the surface alone and adding volume beneath it. That is, it leaves a hole on the original surface.

Still not there yet.

ok. you might look into some other useful video lookinh for keywords and their combinations:
3d scan , 3d print, 3d printing, meshmixer, cleaning, solid, post processing, cleanup…

it gets you videos like:

can you maybe show how you 3d scan looks like or even share stl of it to check?
